Nepeta 'Neptune'

Has anyone tried this plant? What did you think? It was new to me last year. I purchased a few locally and really enjoyed them. I like the more rigid, upright growth habit in this color range as opposed to the Walker's Low and may night salvias that always flop in my rich soil. It was only year 1, so I'll be eager to see how they do this year. Are there other cultivars out there from N. kubanica besides this one? Any idea how you'd propagate a plant like this?

nepeta is nepeta... methods shouldnt really vary per specimen name ... but you never know ...

My small bed in front of the house has a short 3 step walkway going up to an English Roseum Rhodo in full bloom right now on a second level I made with rocks, so it's slightly elevated above everything else. On the right side of the walkway is my Pat Austin getting ready to explode and further up the walkway(only 3 stepping stones long) is Belinda's Dream. In between PA and BD, I planted purplish/blue Capanula(bellflower)........and I love it. It is somewhat similar to phlox with more of petuniaesque bloom. On the left side of the walkway is WS2000 getting ready to bloom and since I didn't know if any roses would get enough sun farther down the walkway, I planted pink buddleia behind WS2000. In between the buddleia and WS2000, I planted yellow potentilla megalantha. I wanted some yellow in the front as I have little of it. It's a nice standard geranium sized plant that gives off solid 1.5 inch yellow blooms. I just bought some lamb's ear and silvermound, although I'm not sure what I am going to do with them yet.........I just like how they feel. The rest of the small front bed consists of Endless Summer Hydrangea(blue) which is caddy corner to Pat Austin, and then a horizontal line where WS2000 has purple cranesbill, neptune heuchera, plantain lilly hosta, and a large blue delphinium. I have a wide array of colors.......almost too much so, so I am adding in more hostas, and green foilage to try to fill in spots and add some green in.

Excellent discussion starter, Lilyfinch! While I don't have any great organized program, I do make a point to add alfalfa pellets and milorganite to the roses in the spring. I used to make a great brew of fish emulsion, superthrive, miracle grow, epsom salts, milorganite and alfalfa in a tub of water, but I haven't had the time to do that in the past few years, and the roses didn't seem to mind. I started by using that recipe on my daylilies, and since some beds have both roses and daylilies, the roses got the same treatment. Luckily, I have a wide open space and the tree companies come and dump shredded mulch here a couple of times a year. I use that for winter protection and also as a weed deterrent in some beds. The bottom of that pile is now black gold! My other weed deterrent is underplanting with sedums, mainly that plain green sedum that spreads so nicely. The Angelina sedum that came out a few years ago is much better, so I'm spreading cuttings through the beds. I also use nepeta, veronica, (such as 'Waterperry), dianthus, and creeping phlox. I try hard not to disturb the soil and bring up any weed seeds, but any time I plant something, I do end up with a few weeds that I need to pull. Bermuda grass is my worst enemy, and I've tried using chemicals to knock it down, but the fight is continual. I have some sort of nasty wild garlic that spreads bulbs everywhere and it is impossible to dig or kill, so that's another headache. Any suggestions on that? It is pretty, but it takes over the beds, and the bulbs work deeper and deeper and get into the root systems of the roses. I found that out when I had to move a rose last year. Spring has come early this year, too early, and my roses are already leafing out! We've had several days in the upper 70s and 80s and I'm terrified that we'll have a late bitter cold snap and everything will get frozen to the ground. Nothing I can do about it, but I know from past experience that some roses won't survive if that does happen. I'm in south central Kansas, zone 6, and we have not had a decent snow yet this winter. Our soil is so dry that I have been watering this past week. Like Huckdog said, it's too early to prune, but the plants think otherwise.

Making my whole kitchen smell like cherry pie! I think Summer Romance and Peach Swirl are both really adding to the fragrance. They're fantastic! Not the most well-put together bouquet, but yummy! Heres one from this morning that is not quite as fragrant, but looks very put together. Black Baccara, Stainless Steel, Iceberg, Love Song (which is extremely floriferous!) and Nepeta. The messy cherry pie bouquet is my current favorite though. Yum!

Sorry to hijack the thread ljsemar! Laurie I hope you absolutely love Lovesong as much as I do! Diane (nanadoll) and others recommended it so highly I had to get it. I got standards and they have been putting out what seems like an endless supply of huge sumptuous blooms nonstop! Neptune is amazing too, huge blooms, and very fragrant! Stainless Steel may grow a little awkwardly like a wannabe climber, but I just am tying him laterally to see what happens. Unique, light silver lavender, intensely fragrant blooms. :-)

Mmmm, I am venturing forth into growing the taller nepetas although my choices, nepeta cyanea (syn. kubanica) and n.nuda are likely to be a bit more challenging for me (but would be great for you, Chris). I have a bunch of bareroot nepetas on order as they generally do very well under the roses, in my well-draning soil...although n.nuda 'Romany Dusk', n.kubanica and one called'Summer Magic probably will need supplemental irrigation and are destined to be taller specimens alongside caryopteris and coronilla (in my new gravel area).

I generally find propagation OK (although I am on safer ground with straight up division of nepetas).. Growing cuttings is quicker- but more testing (for me) than growing from seed. I am ramping up my cutting techniques a lot more this year...as the prospect of hundreds of tiny pots, all summer, always results in vast rates of attrition.

I like to use the first juvenile basal shoots in spring/early summer and grow 5 or 6 softwood cuttings around the edge of terracotta pots, I remove all the leaves apart from a couple at the top of inch stems. I generally prefer to leave them uncovered, in bright shade (iykwim) but given the occasional top-spray.r A process not unlike rooting lavenders and pinks. I don't always bother with rooting hormones, but if I do, I have had the very best results with Rhizopon AA powder (I generally have the 1% pink for most things)..

Thank you @rosaprimula! Those two varieties are very nice. I'll have to see if I can find them offered somewhere. I'll also check to see if the nepetas are big enough this spring for teasing some small chunks out. That seems like the easiest approach. Since the deer are so rampant in the front yard, I'm eager to multiply whatever they won't eat and spread them around. The front yard has always been more of an afterthoguh, but I'm hoping to change that this year. I did quite a bit of plant shuffling up there in the fall as well, and eager to see the results.
