Thanks everyone. I got the name of a guy on Angie's list and they were able to come out yesterday and added the "jamb extensions" of 1 inch around top and on sides. They had to re-install the door because the jamb extensions needed to be on the exterior side leaving an "edge" that would meet the new sheetrock planned for installation on the inside soon. (demoltion of old sheetrock was thorough and nothing left but those darned "horizontal boards" that made making a measurement for the door jambs easy to screw up when done by a non-do it yourselfer. Also a problem if you don't want to eliminate those horizontal boards - we kind of liked the extra weight and sturdiness) Here's a picture that shows the "horizontal boards" causing the mis-match problem but doesn't really show how the jambs don't extend far enough. I used to be very narrow minded. I had this foolish belief you could not mix wood and white trim. Then I grew up to realize the beautiful possibilities. I have also come to truly embrace wood for it's purity, classic lines, earthy feel adding to a rich elegant home. Go for it. I can not remember which TV show I was wacthing, Modern Family or maybe it was Desparate Housewives, no wait... I think it was a movie from Netflicks. The kitchen was exactly as you describe. Linelle, nothing is wrong with white. I just find stained wood to be more cozy and home feeling but I think that option disappeared when I opted for a modern looking door because the unanimous vote on here appears to be that you can stain a door and paint trim but you can not paint a door and stain the trim (casing and baseboard). I have Andersen windows that are unfinished pine because I originally was going to stain them so it makes me sad to think I should have just got them in white and saved all the hassle (if I go with white trim). I will probably for sure be going with wood-look cabinets meaning they will be stained wood. I am looking at medium to dark stains. The other reason I don't jump at white trim is that it is in every new house I see. I can totally understand why, because it goes with basically EVERYTHING. A light grey trim would look better for being different BUT I would have to pick all floor and paints to compliment the grey because I can see it clashing (reds, browns, greens would all look off with a grey baseboard/door/casing, etc). Paddy, this is new. No pics to post yet as I am working on drywall right now. It's a very basic ranch style house so not going for fancy trim detail for that reason alone on top of the cost savings! If it's stained wood it would be clear pine and if it's painted trim it's probably going to be hard shell MDF or clear pine. I have looked online a lot at pictures of wood trim and painted doors. I notice the painted door almost always is a pure white paint. I was thinking a dark color would look good with the stain, or even painting the interior doors the same color the wall is. This would make it be a lot less break of colors.

If you can start with the same wood, it will help in matching the stain. Woods take stain differently and the underlying colors will make the color stain you use look different. A gunstock stain looks different on maple as it does on cherry or walnut or oak. If that's the raw wood in your picture, it looks like walnut, which has a chocolate color. You probably won't want to spend the big bucks it would take to custom make five walnut doors but you may be able to use a maple or stain-grade poplar and the right stain to get a close look. You've got gorgeous trim, you want to go the extra mile to make sure the doors come as close as possible. Also, use a sanding sealer before you stain or take it to someone who does this professionally.
