I also have a question about this that I'm hoping maybe Bill can answer. Our GC is working with the company for our framless shower doors, and this is the email I received from him this morning regarding the placement of the doors in relation to the chair rail that goes all the way around the room, including through the shower. "If the door is hinged on the wall as we discussed, we will need to bevel out the chair rail because it is 1/8" of an inch too big. The bevel would then be filled with grout. This will allow the door to swing without it binding on the chair rail." Does this seem like a good idea? I'm a little hesitant since I have no idea how it will look, and I don't seem to be able to find any images online. Our experience with the contractor has been fantastic but at this point I am slightly annoyed that we weren't advised how the chair rail would affect the glass placement. The glass is already costing us more than expected, and adding another stationary panel will add even more to the total, but that said, we don't want to make the wrong decision in the long run. Advice?

That's exactly what I am getting for my bathtub and it's supposedly going to be installed on Friday. Whether it stays with no rail though depends on whether it can be made watertight. If it can't be made watertight, they will install a very low metal rail. My DH has the same door in his shower and he needed the little rail to make the shower watertight. Here is a picture of it. Here is something to consider. Your walls might not be perfectly straight so the shower door company might have to make a template to make the doors fit properly. Some off the shelf shower doors have a little bit of play in case your walls aren't plumb, but many do not and that is something to think about.

We are shower people, but keep a Kohler Bellwether bathtub in the hall bath in case there is a need to bath a baby or young child in the future. The tub is surrounded by 3 ceiling height tiled walls. The bathroom is 13.5 x 5 feet. I hate the look of by-pass glass doors. In addition, I think it is super uncomfortable for a person to bend over a door track when cleaning the bathroom with doors right next to the person. We then were set to use frame-less custom made glass enclosure. But the more I read, (there are a few postings on this forum regarding this subject) the more I 'simulated' cleaning the bathtub and its surrounding through a frame-less glass enclosure, the more concerns I had for safety and the ease of cleaning. Finally I decided to use an extra long shower curtain from Restoration Hardware instead. We wipe dry bath tub and walls after each shower. I am so glad we have a shower curtain there. I don't think using shower curtain is of a less upscale look, even if it is, I would choose 'practicality' over 'look' any day.

I have searched online and called some local plumbing supply companies. At this point about the only thing I haven't attempted is to find the original builders of the house and contact them. Basically, my shower has two sliding glass doors with a plastic rail in the middle of the bottom frame that allows the doors to slide. In my online searches, I have only been able to find one that is a max 3" in length. I measured mine and it is 8". I have no idea why it has been so difficult to track down. I have included some photos of the old, ugly piece that needs replace. FYI - it is secured to the plastic via a screw in the middle of the guide. Does anyone have any leads? This has been driving me crazy
