Family Room Refresh
Hello all. Looking for help. All furniture is being replaced and I need ideas for types of furniture and placement. Room is 20 x 17 and new TV will be placed on long wall (my husband refuses to place on top of fireplace). I am also looking for ideas for window treatments. Thanks for your help.

Comments (14)For the rug, I would do two of the same rug in different sizes/shapes. Would stick with grey, teal and orange theme to warm it up. Something like This rug . You could also do a custom bench cushion to go over the cabinet for window seating here . It can be customized any way you want - fabric, color, pattern, style. Just make sure those cabinets can support the weight of full grown adult. For a table- would probably stick with rectangular. If you want something "different", round may work depending on the type. Would do a weathered grey wood table to keep in line with the rest of the colors like This If you were going to do a solid color rug, then I would probably use a tufted ottoman as a coffee table in a brick orange to add some texture and color. Comments (49)Thanks all, I think the mockup has really helped me to see that the chairs will look great as they are with the chartreuse fabric. It has always been one of my favorite colors, yet I never thought of it as such a beautiful complement to wood tones. But it is! Only bummer is that the upholsterer can't get to these until mid January. But the new light fixture should be here soon :) And you're right, that's a Corgi under the buffet! We have two at the moment as well as several others over the years. They are a wonderful decorating accessory :) KW, I see what you mean about the black shades and I have gone back and forth about that. When I try white shades on those lamps I somehow miss the black ones. They do create a bit of drama aroud the painting which I like. But we'll see, when the chandelier comes in I'll try switching them out again and see what I think. And the portrait is of my mom, painted in the 1920s. Her parents owned a grocery store in an artist community, and the artist and her husband were regular customers. They were short on cash, so offered to barter a portrait of my mom for groceries. last yearlast modified: last yearFirst things first...the black beams are driving the bus. I would paint walls white, as the ceiling. The fireplace wall, treat it as wood work and use the same white but in a semi-gloss finish. Paint the mantel black, in semi-gloss.
Hang the t v on the wall, per hubby, and paint the little console black. Try two sofas, one facing t v and one facing fireplace. Add an accent chair. Make sure the rug is large enough to get the furniture on it.Your windows haven't been trimmed. Easy to do for a carpenter. Paint them black.
Now the beams have been integrated with the rest of the room.

last yearlast modified: last yearThe Samsung frame TV has a wooden frame and displays artwork (or fish-tank) when not in use. That's my next purchase. You can see that I've been trying to get the same effect but the samsung looks exactly like a painting on the wall.

last yearlast modified: last yearI'll add another vote for The Frame TV as I just got one recently. Love seeing art/color instead of a black hole. This one is the 75" size. Starting with the 2022 models the glass is also matte which makes the digital art look more real and has the added bonus of reducing most of the glare from nearby windows/doors and light fixtures.
You can also do a gallery wall including The Frame TV.

Stay away from "puffy" furniture! If your husband wants recliners, there are much more streamlined, less bulky sofas available these days that have all seats that recline.Be prepared to wait several months to get new furniture.
