Help with long Kitchen Wall - What do I do?

Hello everyone,

My home is a 90's back-split tyle home that has a lot of character. I am looking for some advice on what to do for this long wall that is directly facing the kitchen. The measurements are 13ft L and 3.5 ft H. My husband and I are plant people. We love the whole natural minimalistic aesthetic. We are also trying to decorate the house with a MCM/Scandinavian decor style. I have thought about hanging mirrors, a combo of paintings, one LARGE painting, wallpaper, more plants? (not enough light on this wall) but I am still struggling to land on the best option. I would love any of your feedback or suggestions. Thank you in advance!

I think it would look amazing if you just let that plant do its thing across that wall.

I agree with ilikefriday. The negative space theory says that not every nook and cranny has to be filled. Let the eyes rest.

How old is your home? Did the water come from all around, or primarily from the one location you mention? Do you have a sump pump to collect water from foundation tiles? Is there a drain in the basement floor and did water come up through it? Somehow since you say the problem is periodic, I don't believe your problem is a major one. Walk around the house and carefully inspect the foundation for any settling cracks. Do these align with the places water infiltrated? Also, check for low spots where water might not be running away from the building. These need to be filled with soil. If the source was from a foundation crack, the best solution is to have one of the basement companies like advertise all the time inject sealer outside. If it was from a floor drain, speak with a plumber. If you don't have a sump pump and/or water came from all around, you could have a blocked foundation tile, or no foundation tiles in either case solving the problem for the future is going to be more costly. You need to locate the source - even if it means removing some of the paneling. If you have actual paneling, it is most likely 4 x 8 sections and there is a strip covering the seams every 4 feet. Simply remove the strips (carefully, trying not to split them) and then a sheet of the paneling. You'll need a pry bar, possibly a hammer, wear gloves and it will come off. I think a rug is a trip hazard and unless you really don't cook, it will get dirty. With the right size island/cart you won't need it. The peacock feather arrangement has to go - no one wants feathers in their food and that's the first thing that comes to mind. As for tile behind the stove and hood, I think that beam or duct or whatever it is at the ceiling will interfere with going all the way up. Consider bringing tile around to the window at the same height as it is under the cabinets. Then at the stove take it up to the bottom of the hood.

I think adding more photo canvases on the wall is a wonderful idea! That would be a personal and unique-to-you art installation that would provide a great deal of interest on that wall. You would want to determine the arrangement in advance, deciding how many portrait and how many landscape canvases to add, and then perhaps do a mockup with paper sized appropriately to represent the canvases, to figure out exactly where to hang everything for a cohesive and aeshthetically-pleasing look. Don't worry about the corner - you don't need anything there.

Hmm. I would talk to a contractor and/or structural engineer to see if you can pare down that wall to just the supporting beam. Keep the drywall around the beam but removing most of it would give you a better line of sight and make the space feel more open. It's a really funky design and I'm not sure what they were thinking when they built it!

Can you please tell me what type of plant that is? I would love to try doing that on a wall. The only problem is my thumb is not green, but I could still try. The plant is art.

MCM/Scandi to me implies a certain amount of minimalism, so I agree with the two other commenters who suggested leaving it bare. That looks like a hard to reach spot anyway.

It's unfortunate how that wall slashes the view to the space below, but I'm sure it's structurally required. It looks so heavy over the little open space and ends just below eye level. I'd be tempted to fill in that wall out to the staircase down and put some art there.

@ilikefriday - this is a pothos plant! Relatively easy to grow. They just need a lot of light, not too much watering and fertlizer once a month or so. They love to have support if you want them to grow up a wall. So I just hang 3M command hooks and direct them where I want them to grow :)

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors There's likely a bedroom right there. This is a very typical layout for tri-level and multilevel homes.

If you want to decorate the wall, I think a simple grid of photos with large mats and thin black frames (to relate to your railing) would look great.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors love this suggestion. I think our uptairs bathroom is connected to this wall. But I should look into it. Trust me, there are many choices that were made back then that makes us go.. whyyyy would you do this. lol

Oh, I'm sure that wall is supporting something upstairs. What I'm suggesting is finding out if the wall needs to be that obstructive. Even raising the drywall by two feet would help. With the railing nearly coming up to the bottom of that wall, it makes that area feel too closed in. It may not be an inexpensive solution, but it would vastly improve the design.

@msjoan - You're right. Even if I can take some of the height off, I don't think I can remove the wall completely. Do you think that I should center the picture directly above the island or, center it to the wall? if I include the wall that is above the stairs, it's not centered to the island, if that makes sense...
