Design Dilemma Flooring Woodworking

porcelain slab arch and slab in ceiling hallway doable?

I have a few arches between hallway and living room and dining room. I’d like the whole arch to be porcelain slab. How does the slab stay at the top part without falling down and get supported?

Secondly I have a hallway entryway that has a channel. I’m putting cove lighting led along the sides and maybe some crown moulding within the channel and want the Center of the hallway to have some slab piece as well. See pics. How does the slab stay on ceiling without falling?

Just opening to walk through right . Talk to a good tile setter brick and stone have been used like this for a very long time. Same as doing a shower ceiling. I trully do not understand the need for the porcealin and especailly mixed with crown in what appears to be a very contemporary space .IMO in this style of space less is always more .

What do you suggest be put in for the hallway Center opening? Wallpaper? Textured paint?
So far the fabricator won’t install the slab just cut it. Too risky they said. But my moulding person said we could stick the slab at top, and then use crown moulding on the sides 2” to hold it up in place.

Our GC had a wonderful exercise for us. His assignment even before we met was to have DH & me write out our top 20 items/ideas for the house (in order of importance). We did this seperarately w/o knowing each other's top 20. We then brought this list to GC on our first meeting. This enabled him to get the big picture. We also took these lists to the architect. Along with this list, was a photo of what we desired & a layout we thought we liked. As the process has developed, all of our smaller, nitpicky items have come out. GC has appreciated the thought process that I've put into it all. He said it has made everything move smoothly. In the end, I will have less daily choices to make. Although I did SO much research prior to all of our meetings, I have welcomed GC's ideas & knowledge, as well. Afterall, we are hiring him for his skills, knowledge, & expertise. He has been doing this 30+ years & I have only just recently begun this process. I definitely would not go into this seeming like a total know-it-all or you will make GC's life quite unpleasant. Also, in all honesty, about 90% of our desires for our home, GC had already planned for, so I would really be looking for the best GC you can find.

alright, thanks. gonna have the moorside set on a diagonal and think more about thresholds. tile guy suggests putting the white marble there to separate the two. but, won't 12 " pieces of white marble with grout between not look good as a threshold? i thought thresholds were supposed to be one strip of a stone (or other material). i can't find images of this anywhere and am having a tough time imagining. uggh.

crl- If it's slate, I think you don't have any worries. Slate has a very low absorption rate and therefore is very stain resistant. I previously lived in a house for 30 years with a slate entry area and hallway and we never had any stains despite kids, pets, water on it from walking in from the Seattle rain, and our failure to ever put any protective coating on it. In addition, slate has a coeficient of friction (COF), when wet, in the 0.60-0.80 range. Anything that is at least 0.60 is considered suitably slip resistant for a wet environment. In addition, the more textured a surface is, the higher the COF. Given what your material is and what its texture looks like, I think you can skip the slipperiness test. I would never install a slab on the ceiling... It just needs a beautiful light fixture.

Thanks everyone. So far the best plan I have so far is to put the slab up on the ceiling in that pocket. Hold it there with some wooden stick holding it up. Let it glue and dry. Then take 2” moulding on each side to help reinforce it up. So the slab goes first and then crown moulding on each side to hold it up.

Crown molding to hold glued slab? Beside to be decorative, I don't think it is going to hold anything.

Yeah no fabricator wants to place it on ceiling. So looks like it’s a no go. Will have to do textured paint or wall paper.
