I'd say that if your husband likes it, but you want modern and simple, consider painting it the same color as the walls so that it becomes more of a wall texture than a feature. (If you are doing all white like your example photo it will do this anyway). I don't consider it overly fussy, and it's actually quite popular right now to mix in a few traditional elements such as this into an otherwise minimalist modern design, especially when it relates to the overall style of the house. Based on your front door and casing style, it all seems to be pretty cohesive. As far as resale, I don't think it will effect the value one way or another, but buyers do appreciate well execuited built-in details that make the house special. This may fall into that category. Especially since it is already there, and it will make your husband happy, if it were me I would keep it and bring in my style with the foyer furniture, lighting, and art.

Those tiles look slick as the Dickens. Imagine coming through the door with heals on and ending up somewhere in the far wall. Or a slightly damp leather soled shoe - it would be like a skating rink. It's your choice. They are handsome tiles. It would help keep a sense of cohesion. I would lay tile to the end of the parquet. And then tile the powder room in the same. You could run the tiles all the way down the hallway but it would depend on the rest of the space and how they would tie in together. Remember: those BIG tiles are going to be a PITA to lay in a small powder room.

I see no point in a runner except for looks. IMO add some art on those walls and then decide if you need a runner . Just make sure the mat at the door is big enough to allow more than one person at a time on it. Why does the front door open out?
