Absolutely not. You already have 2 gables how would this be one bit better I like your home as it is maybe a differnt color combo

I'm feeling you can get a 40' gable front design with lots of options. For a single gable lowering the roof pitch to go towards modern. 3/12 gives you a gable height of 5 feet at the center. A single-story layout would allow windows following the gable. Good for a deep front space landscaped for privacy. Or flip that around for the back yard and use less windows and more wall on the front.

Thank you for replying and I apologize for being unclear. Those photos are an example - not my house. I’m THINKING about building a front gable bungalow like the photos but 40 feet wide instead of the narrower widths typical to the style.

If the lot you're building on dictates a 40' front elevation then engage an architect to draw something bungaloid for you. It won't look like the classic examples of the style, but maybe you can get something that evokes the style, but fits the lot and accommodates what you want on the interior. Trying to use a stock plan is always problematic and the builder standard plans tend to be mismashes of several styles that end up looking wrong on some level.

Thank you for that comment- you have identified my exact concern! I am just at the imagining stage and feel like I should get some ideas for myself before spending time and $ hiring an architect.

I’m drawn to that bungalow style because I like the idea of one simple roofline and clear and simple interior plan.

Also, Im not even sure architects make simple plans. The architect plans I’ve seen on this site have roof lines and more complex interiors.

Lots of architects are capable and willing to make "simple" plans. I personally think two staggered gables are much more visually appealing than one larger gable, but I'm sure you can find a competent designer to provide alternative options for you to compare.

A 40 foot wide gable will look like a 40 foot wide gable. Other factors such as proportions, scale, material, roof pitch, overhang, composition, detailing, orientation, setting, etc. will effect if it will "look attractive". Do not let your perception of "typical to the style" distract you, it may be a perception misconceived from bastardized house designs that someone called a "bungalow". Find local architects that has designed in the style you wish to achieve and start the selection process of finding the right architect for your project. They will design a house with your to meet your needs and for your site.

Mark, I appreciate your wise words. At the moment I’m enjoying “building” the house in my head. We have the property and plan to move in two years so will start the architect search in six months maybe.

If your end goal is designing houses, become an architect; it only takes a minimum of eight years (so far it has taken me 62 years).

If you want to have a great home and be a part of the design process, find a local architect like Architectrunnerguythat will sit down with you at your kitchen table and work out a design with you.

Start talking with local architects now to see how they will be to work with and if they fit into your timeline.

But Mark, it’s so fun to play in my head without having to make any final decisions or spend any money! But we will def get an architect. Already been asking around. The property is 16 hours from where we live now (by car) so we don’t have established contacts yet. Thank you!

If you plan to move in 2 years, and you're building a custom home, you need to get an architect NOW. A custom house will take a minimum of a year to build and that's after permits, etc are gotten. It can take several months before you nail down the design as to how you want it too.

Wow - thank you for that time frame. The guy who built my parents house - near by - gave me a shorter build time. But I don’t think he was factoring permits and perhaps other delays.

IMO first your think about the design style you like best that works with your interior style. I know I often say you can have them be different but honestly when designing a new build you might as well have it be cohesive. Id agree you will be lucky to get into the new place in 2 yrs and if you wait 6 months to hire the proper help you will not be in the new house in 2 yrs .A builder is not the guy who designs the house that he builds .I went to your idea books and IMO you need to decide on a style .

Patrica - I appreciate your curiosity. And you are right so about me. I have two basic visions: yellow/green house with bright color interiors or a neutral house with neutral interior.

The lot is 25 acres with entrance facing west. There is a small old tear down house but we will use well, septic and power access. Building site using those items is on a narrow ridge that slopes pretty sharply on the north side.

Some things I know I want:
(1) a house that looks like it grew there with simple roof lines.
(2) sufficiently deep porch across west facing front.
(3) living room with picture windows to north (mountains) and west (sunsets) and ideally opening to a outdoor living room porch on the north side.
(4) kitchen with an eating island with windows facing south and east and door to smaller porch on south east corner
(5) casual seating area off of kitchen
(6) nook area for a small dining table - we live books so maybe with bookshelves.
(7) straight stair case to basement that’s 4 foot wide and 11 Inch wide steps about 7-71/2 high. We have that kind of staircase on our back porch now and it’s a dream.
(8) master bedroom with windows north and east
(9) second bedroom facing east or north or east.
(10) at least 2 full bathrooms, maybe a powder room
(11) All plumbing on one or two walls as close together and as close to well/septic as possible.
(12) Garage. Maybe underneath or maybe in south west corner of building site. From front entrance, Garage would be a bit ahead of the house but off to the right side.

For anyone still interested in my little drama here - this is an aerial photo of the site. As I mentioned the entrance faces (mostly) west.
