living room help please!

last year

Hi! I am closing on this house in 2 weeks. This is not my furniture,decor etc…I need help with furniture ideas…I am going to take down all window treatments (there is a pool behind in the backyard). The front door opposes the fireplace. The fireplace has an odd window above it so I’d like ideas on that too.,in general, I’d like to get some tall plants and greenery. There are columns that make it more formal but I do prefer a less formal approach. I was even toying with the idea of a hanging chair…the fact that the fireplace and tv the two focal points are on adjacent walls is a little difficult for me to process also…any help is appreciated!

Please provide floor plan with dimensions…and some straight on photos…all of the photos taken on the diagonal with multiple columns are confusing.

These are the ones from Zillow. My husband did get some measurements and I’ll add those as soon as I can. This is the only other picture I have right now.

Hippie Heaven! And I see bags packed and ready for the next adventure! How about striving for balance with the furniture and then tackling paint/color and where all the accesories should go? The chest behind the sofa might do well where you have the bags on the floor under the tapestry. Your heavy piece is well placed as a visual counter balance to the fireplace opposite, but it does seem to blockade the hall. Could it be switched with the antique radio? Can't really see the kitchen, but could that plum sofa work as a banquette at the dining table? What do you think? Want to do some pushing and shoving to see?

I like your room so far but I think you need an easy chair with table and lamp turned toward the TV. Some things that bother me a little is, I think the rug should go the other way. I am not sure I like the curtains in front of the baseboard heat....maybe curtains could come just down to the top of the baseboard heat????. Also I believe a longer, lower TV console would look a lot better and not painted...just wood.. Also your ottoman....I assume it is not attached to your sofa? If not, I would put it in the middle of your sofa and use as a coffee table. Love your sofa and rug.

Hi Lucy, I'm Poorvi. I've generated a mock-up of your room. I tried my best to keep Serena&Lily in mind while designing the layout for you. I didn't want to block those beautiful large windows, hence gave a floating seating arrangement. Place the couch a walking distance away from the window facing the fireplace. Make sure you have enough space for movement. I have placed two sofas in an L shape and two chairs facing the sofa, thus creating a cozy conversation space. To achieve symmetry I placed two storage units on either side of the fireplace. You could also use low storage consoles to achieve a similar look. Let me know if this was of help to you. Consider a grouping of four swivel chairs in front of the fireplace and a pair of upholstered benches at the two windows; game area in the corner if your bunch enjoy that kind of family time. I see a chain hanging from the ceiling which reminds me to ask about lighting. What kind of fixture lights the stairwell? If you ever want to add TV, consider enclosing the stairs with a pony wall pre-wired for TV on living side and for a pair of sconces on the stairs side. Here are some fun and comfy looking chairs. These are a bit more traditional; what's your style? One take on the pony wall idea.

I’d love for the floors to be darker as well and paint in the future too but we need new furniture sooner. It’s 20’x20’

Such a lovely room that's trying to take advantage of the view to the pool. I wonder why all the window coverings? Does the sun beat in? You might want to live in the house a bit before you strip it all away? It's an odd juxtaposition to have a fireplace surrounded by views of a pool!! I know it's not yours but if they had just turned the sectional a bit more towards the windows the views for fireplace/outside/TV could have worked better..........

The windows do appear to face west…I don’t mind having some window coverings-but something less obvious.

You’re right we do need to live in it for a bit before determining the exact window treatments. It is an odd place but we fell in love with the property. There are tons of fruit trees and it is in a wonderful neighborhood.

My main issue is the furniture/color schemes. We are strongly considering a sectional but I want to add in extra seating etc..I’d love to keep the color of the walls and make it work it’s not something I’d have chosen but it will cost a small fortune to redo the entire house and it’s in mint condition. Any ideas on color schemes to make this work? And what to do with the mantle of the fireplace etc…
