Flooring dilemma

Not in our budget to change these terracotta floors just yet…I’m thinking of adding a couple of runners to brighten up the place for now. Any suggestions?

I think first make sure all the lighting is LED 4000K that will brighten the space better than a runner. I think if you want a runner get a simple no pattern one for sure

Paint the floors or install peel-and-stick tiles over the surface.

Runners will only add to the chaos.

BTW the wall color is not helping the appearance of the space. Are you planning to paint the walls?

Unless you are matching the finger parquet, you would go ahead and install a white oak floor that matches the kitchen (and the golden retriever:-). That will allow the parquet to be the "accent" all by itself. The second suggest I have....look to have the parquet refinished. It's looking a little tired. A little old. If the parquet is thick enough for a sand/refinish, I would look at doing that at the same time. You might just find the REAL colour of the wood underneath that old solvent based finish. The kitchen hardwood looks to be in good shape. It might need a buff and coat (a little abrasion and then a coat of new finish applied to perk it up), it might not. Again, while the professionals are in, have them look at it to see if it needs attention as well. With the work that probably needs to be done, you will most likely be out of the house for a week or two anyways...might as well get EVERYTHING done all at once to save you from having to bring them back in 5 years to do the kitchen/parquet.

What a disappointment about the flooring. If it were me, if having the molding was the only thing keeping me from moving forward with cabinet install while things get sorted out, I wouldn't let that stop me. I would think there could be an acceptable trim that would solve that issue. You already have 2 kinds of flooring coming together, I would not add a third. If you pulled out the foyer tile and ran that into the kitchen, that could work, but not adding an additional, different tile to the mix. If you must add tile in place of the wood, I'd find one that works with your cabinets (maybe something close to the color of the wood floors, but not wood look tile). Or maybe slate? Run it into the entry. I agree about rethinking the waterfall counter. It really doesn't appear to be suited to your style home. But if you decide to move forward with it, could you live with a temporary counter on the island until the floors are sorted out, then have the island finished? Lots of people live with plywood counters for a while, for a variety of reasons.

Thank you Rebasheba. You bring up some very helpful points. I am now looking to change my counter selection since I was told that the company is not very reliable. I was looking at Ceasartone Calacatta Nuvo but I haven't been able to see a sample yet. I'm concerned the white might be too dark with the chantilly lace. However, I like that it has a much softer veining. So if anyone has paired these two together I would love to hear from you or see a picture. I don't wish to extend the hardwood floor that I already have as it's that orangey yellow oak that I don't like and would eventually like to change. Maybe I should have done this first!?! My goal is to try to update the kitchen and make it a little more modern. My home is a tudor style and it is over 30 years old. I like a cool kitchen but I want to be able to balance it out so it's not too cold. My kitchen knobs are brass and paint colour could warm it up overall. The oak floors are not in the same room. They are in the hallway but I have doors to close it off. My thinking was to pick a floor with grey to match the grey veining in the countertop. I am worried that a white floor would not be enough contrast with the white cabinets. I'm just getting a little burn't out and utterly confused!! Thought I had if figured out but it seems I'm going backwards and not forwards !! Thanks for the help!

Edge to edge carpet anywhere is a royal pain, with a built in expiration date. We don't know your climate. We don't know if you have basement, or crawl space or slab foundation. We can't tell if the "bathroom" is a powder room, or if it has bath/shower etc. You haven't shown the actual kitchen. Would it need a rearrange or remodel and if so ?? When? Best options in order:Area rugs over: A sand on site hardwood floor all first floor except perhaps laundry /mud entry An engineered hardwood More of the LVP ( luxury vinyl PLANK ) which is different than lvt. You need a lot more info before anyone can wisely advise. The more unified the flooring, the better.

My husband doesn’t want to do anything like that to the floors unfortunately. I deeply regret our choice of wall color. We are planning on changing it one day, just not any time soon. What color wall paint would you recommend? Thank you!!

If you have painted recently I can understand why you wouldn't want to do so again right away. The next time you paint any room do more sampling so you're not surprised by how the color looks when the whole room is done. When I think I have a color I like I paint a sample that is at least ten feet square to be sure. I have changed my mind at that point. Small samples or chips just don't do the job. If you end up painting before you replace the tile I would go with a lighter color.

Those floors are not great, so save up to replace them. It looks like you have wood elsewhere, so that would be the best replacement. A good flooring contractor can match the wood as long as it's finished on site. You won't be able to buy factory finished. As long as you buy rugs you can return you can always try some until you find something you like. I am honestly at a loss with those floors as to what will work. Hopefully someone else will have some good ideas.

That’s exactly how I feel! I’m at a loss! We have been here 6 years. The house has so many other (non-aesthetic) issues that we are taking care of, before doing anything like floors, etc. I want to paint soon though, that’s for sure. And I thought a rug might help, I guess I’ll buy a few solid colored runners and return them if anything. Thank you!

If you could paint the grout between the tiles a color more like the tiles, that would tamp down the busyness of the floors.
