Color Selection For Spanish Home- Help!

Hey There, Helpful Houzzers! Oh man do I need your help.

We are trying to work with the cooler colors of our new pool and hardscape while having a Spanish home that faces East in the front and West in the backyard. To make it even more challenging, we currently have a clay tile roof and red brick in the front. 🤦‍♀️. We’re trying to stay as warm and also neutral as possible with paint colors while working with the differing tones in place.

We have chosen Sherwin William’s Alabaster as it looks fantastic on all areas of the home.

Here are my questions:
-Would Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain work with SW Alabaster for windows, fascia, gutter and eves?
-Should I paint the windows a different color than the fascia, eves, gutters since it is right up against the tile? What color if so?

How about this...

Paint all trim the same colour as your windows and paint the stucco in SW Alabaster which I think should work with your new pool colour scheme.

In the front, i presume there's a reason you don't have grass so I would stain all the ciment in a similar colour as your stone paving in the back. You can install a long flower box below the window and plant something simple that works in your area.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your awesome and helpful advice as well as your other suggestions!!! It is funny because I too was thinking about staining the red clay brick to match the back in order to save on the cost of paving it. Our entire front yard got decimated when they built the pool but we will put fescue grass or something in to fill it back out.

I love that planter and the chandelier light you suggested!! What do you think about the planter you suggested being Cor-Ten steel to tie in a little bit with the roof’s warmth? Or do you feel black is better?

Also, any thoughts on adding sconces on each side of the garage door?

You have a ton of questions and I will do my best to address them, I also have AADD so if I start to ramble and jump back and forth just overlook that :). We need to simplify this more because there are certain issues you can't change..... being on a slab and the weight issues. Any slab has to be reasonably flat and dry, but in your case it needs to be almost dead flat and dry. We are supposed to always check slabs for vapor emissions that can go unoticed when there is carpet over top that allows the slab to breath and release moisture without any problems. You have an 18yr. old glued down wood floor that has exhibited no problems, in my view that is as good an indicator one is going to get..... so we'll just say you are dry. I don't know how many sq.ft. is involved but it takes some space for an installer to check the slab for flatness and then take measures to correct it. Sometimes a low spot can be a few feet in diameter and with the feathering needed I may need 6', 8' or more to deal with it. If I don't have space I could be featuring up to a high spot underneath furniture. It is best to try and figure a way to go one room a time, clean it out, then go on to the next room. If you have your heart set on an engineered BC, then get it :), life is too short to fret over that as long as you know about this issue and are okay with it. On glued down floors the thickness does not really matter as much as opposed to floating. What does matter is the top wear layer thickness and using the right adhesive. A 3mm or 4mm thick wear layer is actually better in the long run as a 5mm thick . Going too thick with the wear layer can cause a phenomenon called "dry cupping" .... the NWFA and NOFMA are aware of this and it is being addressed. If you go with a glued down engineered wood floor and want to put on a sealer as "insurance" , then do it. In your case I would strongly consider using Stauf 960 which is a quality sealer and adhesive combined in one application. You pay alot more for the adhesive but you only have one labor issue. Imo you could also go with a floating floor. But to pull this off you must use a quality product and (here I go again)..... the concrete must be flat. There is a laminate out there that I have personally installed that is almost bullet proof. That would be Wilsonart , which is a high pressure laminate referred to as an HPL. Putting that down along with using their blue fusion glue in the joinery can take any weight you want to put on top of it. When I do that I recommend to the client upgrading the underlayment to a product Sound Solutions. You cannot walk on this type of install and tell that it floats. You could also go with a floating engineered wood... this is where thickness comes into play. I prefer to use nothing less than a 1/2" in thickness and a where the joints get glued up, or, choose a good reliable click-lock system like the valinge or Uniclic joinery systems. They both hold together well. The wood should also be waht is called balanced.... the top layer equals the bottom. You are very typical of alot of my clients. Quit stressing so much :).

Matt and Ash Construction and Design Inc. - yes, this is just the look I am going for! What sort of material would you recommend for the patio itself? kiminpl - I think I am leaning towards that, the concrete. Seems the simplest and most cost-effective. I would love to get the name of a contractor, but I can't figure out how to private message you! I was resistant to the big chunky pergola look, but maybe I'm just used to seeing ones not made to fit the scale of the homes (looooot's of cheap flips when I was house shopping). Dig Doug's Designs(8A) - I really like this! I wonder if it would look as nice not raised. The only problem I have with putting anything in front of that room to the right of the patio is that wall has my only access to the crawl-space under the house. Maybe it could be moved... l pinkmountain - That's what I am leaning toward. Terracotta tiles are beautiful but I imagine quite expensive to install outdoors and might be fragile/take a lot of maintenance. What do you think I need to look out for to make sure it is done properly?

First I must respectfully disagree with you. I think your new home is gorgeous. I do agree that it needs a front path more equal to the value of the house itself. I suspect the rounded awnings were used to repeat the arched niche surrounding the window of the room to the left. Is that room the dining room? It is not uncommon for Spanish style houses to have rectangular windows with some arched windows It is not a problem that you need to disguise with current awnings. . A more common type of awning is what I read is called spear awning. Usually they are dark green or ashy brown. The current awnings remind me of a commercial building. Most people use awnings only on southern and western exposures. My other critique involves the niche. I wonder if that was once a much larger window. Here are some examples of the window filling the niche. Windows or French doors to the right of the entrance. ^^

I'm glad you like it, I do too! For the planter, what ever material you use I would go with black. Touches of black makea everything else stand out plus it leaves the importance to you nice wood front and garage doors. And yes a great idea to flank your garage door with sconces. I would choose the same style as the pendant, in black, and don't be afraid to look at large ones so that they don't look skimpy.

You can paint or stain just about any surface.

I wouldn't choose a white for the stucco...too many comparisons that could make the house look dirty. I would paint or stain the red brick patio.

I like this photo with a touch of gray in the undertone of the paint. It could work well with the color of your pavers. B.M. Moonstone.

We did end up painting the stucco SW Alabaster and everything else (trim, windows, etc) BM Iron Mountain and it is coming out beautifully!

But the red brick is now all I can see and it’s driving me 🤪

Any and all brick stain color recommendations are welcome and appreciated!

What ever white colour you choose, I suggest you paint 2 coats on a large foam core board (available in dollar stores) and walk around the house to see the colour in different lights.

I sure did, Lisdev! You should have seen me walking around our home’s exterior with 15 different white paint sample cans and multiple brushes! An East to West facing house is rough for paint! I was almost dead sure the winner was BM’s Swiss Coffee until I noticed how much green the Western afternoon sun pulled! I wanted to tear my hair out. This is the house right now. Painters are almost half way done with it. Alabaster and Iron Mountain.

I'm not there in person but I know Alabaster is a nice white for stucco so I think your house will look great and nicely updated. I think Swiss Coffee would have been too dark so you made a good decision.
