Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Struggling with layout for bathroom remodel

Looking to expand our bathroom through an existing closet on the right. However, we found out today that we’d actually lose a foot in width because there’s a staircase behind this. Originally I was planning to center the vanity and have a tub and toilet to the left and storage and shower to the right. Now that doesn’t seem possible. We also have the option of expanding back through an existing closet, and that would add additional 12 sq ft, but I’m still struggling to find a decent layout. I’d also prefer to keep that closet if possible, but willing to remove if needed. The biggest problem is that I’d really like to have a tub but it feels impossible. Any suggestions?

I assume the closets are in bedrooms so what do you propose for those if you steal the space . Some pics of the space would be great. In your drawings you need to show us where the toilet is . It is very expenzive to move toilets and often not practical. Have yought of a nice deep soaker tub/ shower combo ? Please also post where the other closet is that you could access. Please post all of that info here in commnets do not start another post.

Your wish list is long for the available space- Shower, tub, vanity, toilet, and storage. Can one use be dropped or moved to another bath? Is there room in the hall for a furniture piece dedicated to towels for instance?

The "regular" bath layout that jensbride posted first is very similar to what our DD & DS shared for years and worked very well. The door, however, was a pocket style and placed directly across from the toilet. This allowed the vanity to be scooted around the corner to take up the whole wall. It leaves the toilet close to the tub, but with lots of elbow room. Our kids just learned to keep the door partially closed when the bath wasn't in use due to the "view".

Yes, it's the master bath, we want/need a tub in there. The space is large (11'2" x 14'2") , so I'm not sure what you mean by a space this size? The current layout has a lot of wasted space on the closet/makeup vanity side, as there's a pocket door going into the bath/shower side. The Drywall "box" is also wasted space since it was built out only to fit the garden tub/vanity. I was thinking the new shower and tub could expand into that whole wall, which would then easily fit a large tub and a large shower, but I'm a little stumped on the best way to do the remaining layout. Free software allows you to design as much as the game Operation prepares you to perform surgery. This is not a criticism of you personally, just a commentary about how without the knowledge of design principles or construction experience, no type of software will prevent you from making costly mistakes. For example, moving a toilet as far as you are showing can be quite expensive. My advice is to meet with a few contractors and/or designers first to assess your space and advise you on any limitations and potential overall cost. The information you receive may better help you to set a realistic design direction.

Unless you move the laundry to the basement there isn't room to do everything you'd like. I assume the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom is coming from the garage? I think you're closer to what you want with the second drawing, but check the code requirements for spacing between the sink and toilet in the half bath. I think you'd want 7-8 feet for a sink and toilet across from each other without feeling cramped. But a 12" deep pantry is still useful. I would definitely sacrifice the tub for a larger shower. That's probably what is used every day and a big selling point for when you sell. You may not have enough room for double vanity either. While you can have two sinks in 60", that's cramped. You are sacrificing counter space for that. Only you can decide whether the sink or counter is more valuable to you. Be aware that code usual requires at least 30" for a toilet. Check your local code to be sure you're leaving enough room for it. Sadly, I don't know how you're going to get more closet space. I have a large cedar closet in my basement for out of season items. You will probably have to take that approach.

This is the current set up. The toilet will almost certainly be moving. Expensive or not, the design is already challenging and we can’t work around the toilet. Yes, we have accounted for losing the closets. Neither of the closets are in our bedroom. The one to the right is in the hallway and is one of two linen closets. It is extra unneeded space. The other closet is in the office/guest room. It is currently unused, and we could replace with an armoire if needed. But this is why I’m hesitant to lose it, because it could impact the future usage of that room as a bedroom.

I’d really love to make a tub and shower work in this bathroom, which is why I’m struggling. We could definitely go light on storage, as we do have a linen closet in the hallway. We also were planning to move the door, as the placement on the left creates a narrow corridor that can’t really be utilized.
