Backsplash for Kitchen?

Hi! We are in the process of renovating our kitchen. We have an open floor plan and as you walk up the stairs, the kitchen wall between the window and patio doors is what people will see as they come into our space. This is the concept of our new kitchen layout with a 66" island in the centre. We are hoping to do a walnut on the bottoms and a matte white for the upper cabinets and the pantry next to the fridge. We need some help or at least reassurance - haha. Feels like a really big decision and investment in our future.

I would love to hear what people think about the layout, the two-toned cabinetry and most importantly, the backsplash that should go behind the range. I have been staring too loooong at my kitchen =)

Oh and any flooring ideas??

I can't tell because of the perspective of the rendering, but make sure you have 48" between the island and the perimeter cabinets. 42" is the recommended minimum. IMO two-toned cabinetry is trendy. People have had white cabinets in kitchens for centuries, but the two-toned idea is relatively new. Maybe if you go back far enough it also used to be done, but not consistently. Anything that pops up out of the blue has the potential to date a kitchen. However, if it's something you love and you expect to be living in this house for a long time then maybe this isn't a concern for you. It's your money and your kitchen so it's your choice. In any case, it is way too early to be thinking about a backsplash except in general terms. You can use your kitchen without a backsplash. After everything else has been installed, bring home samples to try. It will fall into place or you can post a couple options for feedback.

Pick the backsplash when all else is installed and finished so you can get the big picture.

the wall between hood and patio door needs a cabinet [if this were mine]....you have a small kitchen. try glass cabinet doors if you want , but the priority of seeing wall ? coming off the stairs? lacks merit.....I would try for a slightly smaller fridge . I would try to have counter left and right of fridge as you've practically eliminated that valuable element . [cabs down to counter in your corner is a bad idea]... Either a skinnier pantry or base rollout pantry cabinets. are you having a microwave placed anywhere?

It is OK, if it is what you want to do. It is just a matter of taste. Some people think that the 4" granite splash with tile on top is dated, but it is also determined by area/region. Where I live it is very normal, and I am abnormal for not doing one, but I am also abnormal because I am doing a more modern kitchen. I think there’d be too many patterns competing for attention. If your heart is set on lantern tile there are some very beautiful ones that have a smooth surface and would look quite nice in your kitchen. Using a grout colour matched to the colour of the tile would further minimize the busy-ness that a lantern tile can create.

I would go to a couple of tile stores and buy samples in both green and a creamy white. Were you planning on painting and getting a new window treatment? I would order samples for the window treatment and paint and see how it all coordinates. It took me many, many samples, and 5 tile stores to find the warm white subway I am using. Sounds silly but each one had a different color and tone.......don't even get me started on how many samples I ordered for the roman shades.

you are going to have to deal w the counter as far as coordinating things. I guess whoever did the blue paint wasnt ready to put up a splash so they used color contrast which in a way has worked. You may need to bring in tile samples as I dont think coordinating everything cabs/counters and tile will be especially easy. White tile in a subway is always a default but with the counters it will just be okay. if you want to match up w counters it looks like creams and/or grays so you just have to find the right one. maybe a light cream but then you are playing into the yellows so much...but you may find something. leave the teal paint until you have time to do this search. decorative small plates or mini pictures botanical themes can be aligned along the teal temporarily for whatever reason you think it's OFF. take it light- heartedly. note narrow ledge for use/ pegs for mugs etc....more use. something like these if it were mine and I was uncertain and the right tile doesn't emerge. way over on right above the narrow counter put some pegs for mugs....above sink a ledge ....etc.

My general advice is that a backsplash should be a background for other elements in a kitchen. The heavily patterned tiles being used a lot these days IMO will become dated quickly.

Not a pro, but I wonder if it would be better to move fridge down to the end of cabinet run to give room for more counter space between sink and fridge. What’s the other side of the room look like? Is there space for a pantry?

Spend your time researching the floor. Much bigger design and budget decision to make. Worry about the backsplash after you have made all other decisions.

I'm usually very flexible on kitchen design, as we all work/live differently, but your kitchen has some real functional issues.

If you are the type to use a dish drying rack, it would need to go on the left, but if you have anything on the counter there, you won't be able to open the cabinet doors that go down to the countertop.

If you are working at the sink, you will get whacked when anyone opens the 2 doors on right side of fridge.

Are those DW drawers between sink and range?

Very little prep space next to the sink.

Flooring: looks like a semi-open concept, so hard to suggest flooring that would work throughout. Start searching for ideas, to help with ALL of your choices. Test next to your cabinet sample and decide if you want light or dark and the content.

Backsplash: keep it simple and only decide after flooring and cabinets are installed (and then choose paint color). Consider a half wall shelf application and the wall between stove and sliding door will be also be more appealing, as you mentioned that space as being important.

Layout: Has a pro designed this layout? I’m not a pro, so just imagining using. The corner between sink/fridge is awkward to access cupboards and the small counter space is non-functional. The proximity of someone at sink and another opening fridge could be an issue. Suggest moving fridge to the end and consider a narrower design in white. Consider how to address to the right of fridge - full length cupboard or more counter space/cupboards.

If you could show the entire space and provide dimensions, you will receive more helpful advice. For instance, if possible, can island be widened to accommodate the sink/dishwasher. Your sink is not centered under window which feels off anyway. With a wider island, add stools if possible and even recycle bins on the side.
