That's what they do at this time of year. My Hass avocados are at their least attractive in April, when the rest of the garden is gorgeous. Their leaves turn brown and drop off (all over the flower beds), leaving almost bare branches. Then the flowers come out, and the trees start to get fresh new green growth by May. I think of them as semi-deciduous. As far as growth, avocados need a huge amount of water and they should be heavily mulched at all times with no disturbance to the roots. If branches are exposed to the sun this spring and begin to get sunburned it may kill the tree. I painted the trunks and new branches with white latex paint when they were babies because I had almost killed them by watering so little, and there was not enough leaf canopy to protect them. Their feeder roots are at the soil surface and only go down a foot to two feet, where the soil dries out rapidly, so avo farmers leave all of the leaf litter under the tree. I ran a soaker-drip line around the drip line of each tree and gave them two full hours of water twice a week. I have cut back since, because the trees are now big and shade their own roots. My avocado likes to be watered about once a week in summer, twice if we have a heat wave. The roots of avocados are shallow, in the top 18-20" of the soil, so frequent watering is good, as long as the soil drains well. Avocados like very good drainage. Root shallowness is also why avocados love a mulch under them, and using their own leaves is the best mulch! So just leave all the leaves that fall right under the tree. The fruit drop could have been because of lack of water, like you suspect, but can also be from incomplete pollination. Avocados set better fruit with another avocado near by, but will set some fruit in California even without another tree, but in some years they will set better than others. I feed mine a good citrus food 3 times a year, spring-summer-fall, that keep the leaves nice and green. Be sure to use a Citrus food, most will also have avocado on the label. And avocados can get various fungal leaf spots, which looks like what you have. I found a spray with a good fungicide, like Bonide copper soap spray or Ortho Disease B Gon, used according to the label, got rid of it. Be sure to spray the ground underneath also, fungal spores can hide out there. Be aware, fungicides are preventative, the spots already there won't be cured, but it will protect new growth from getting spots. I actually only had to spray two times over a couple months to get good protection, and the next year the spots didn't come back either. But I keep a look out for them just in case. Either squirrels or-,most likely at that size- the tree aborted the small fruits. Avocado's from my experience wont hold fruit until the are at least 6-8' tall. Grafting makes them bloom very young..and every single flower will fall off and any fruit that do get to some size also. The tree's seem to know that they need to have some branch diameter and roots and enough foliage to support the heavy fruits.
