Design Dilemma Electrical Wiring Bathrooms

ONE sconce instead of two?

Any chance there’s someone who can share a picture with me of a bathroom with only one sconce beside the lavatory instead of two? In an attempt to cut renovation costs, I’m considering only one sconce on the wall next to a small double vanity inside my daughters bathroom. From the doorway, only one side of the vanity is visible, and I was thinking a sconce there with a towel hook. And on the other side, which isn’t visible from the doorway, two small framed prints on top of each other with a matching towel hook. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I’d make double sure, even triple sure, the the one sconce provided the optimal lighting one would need in a bathroom before I nixed adding a second to save money. Because a lovely renovated bathroom that isn’t functional because a lack of good lighting will cost more in the long run (maybe not in actual dollars but in ease of use or even in actual dollars if you decide to add light later on). I’d save money on a cheaper sconce, or cheaper towel bars, no art, etc.

Could you just put a light bar above the mirror instead of a single sconce? They are very affordable and you won't run the risk of low light or having it look odd. This one is $70 at Lowes:

Brutuses, The vanity we're installing is with two sinks in the 75" length. The CENTER of each sink is only 16 1/2" from the side wall. It sounds like you have 16" of counter top space plus the amount of space from the centerline of your sinks until you get to the side wall. That sounds to me like it would add up to at least 2' from the centerline of the sink to the side wall---plenty of elbowroom. I wasn't worried about bumping the sconces but rather bumping the wall with the elbow. Does that make sense? I asked because your layout looks very similar to mine.

Go on Circa Lighting. The sconces are all Visual Comfort, and it is hard to FIND a five inch plate!. Most are 4 and 4 1/2 You will have your pick, I assure you http://www.circalighting.com/wall/decorative-wall/ Scrooooollllll!! Most in multiple finishes. I'd look for a square /rectangular plate. Hate the round squeezed in there. Four inch below two...... and last two are 2.75"........and maybe TOO narrow unless you switch the box. But I would. One would not be sufficient nor would it be balanced. In design we want to create that balance, with even proportions. So going with two sconces will give you a "balanced and completed" look and feel.

To your original question--we have two pendants, one centered on each window, over ours. We don't have work space to the left of the sink so a bit different, but honestly even if we did I don't think that would be prime prep space so wouldn't need additional lighting. I only rarely turn the sink lights on--generally we just use the overhead lighting--but love them when I do. (We didn't have room above our window frames to do sconces so didn't even contemplate it, but I think the pendants work beautifully as task lighting.) We used three semi-flush large (14" shade) schoolhouse fixtures for our general lighting since we didn't want cans--those have been terrific over the years, and light the room overall and also our center island space. Our state has pretty tight guidelines around kitchen lighting so those are fluorescent (hopefully soon LED when we get around to rewiring them!) while the pendants are incandescent, and that's been a nice combo.

One sconce won't look right at all. Either buy less expensive sconces or follow the advice of Olychick above.

Your daughter will need either two scones on either side of the mirror or one large light fixture above it. This will provide adequate light for make-up application. Anything less lacks function. Put out that extra bit of money - you won't regret it.

The sconce would be purely for looks, not actually lighting. (There will be several recessed lights in the ceiling above the vanity, and another decorative ceiling light as well.) I’ve always liked a lamp near a bathroom sink for low lighting/ambiance purposes. So that would be the purpose of the sconce. It would also be on a dimmer so that it could be used as a night light. Here’s pictures of the idea I have. One of standing inside the bathroom in front of the vanity and the other is the view from the door (which is inside the bedroom, and the other door in this view is the door leading into the tub/toilet area) Thoughts?

Please keep in mind this is a computer program and images are distorted. The decor, cabinetry, etc. is also just for the purpose of getting a visual of my design thoughts. The bathroom is currently an empty shell. :-/
