Need a new dining room rug

last year

I am finally getting to my dining room. I am repainting and having wainscoting installed on the bottom half. I like my dining room furniture but I think I want to change the fabric on the chairs to a neutral color instead of a pattern and get a new rug. My living room rug is less than 5 feet away. I can’t seem to find something that I really like. So far I like these rugs but next to my current rug I am not sure. Thoughts or ideas appreciated.

I think I had that exact fabric on my dining chairs that I bought back in 2000! I had them reupholstered in 2012.

Not really loving any of those rugs with your living room rug, but hard to really see from the photos.

I think this might be a good possibility:

Can you show us both rooms? I love mixing colors and patterns, but that look depends on other factors.

Thanks for the comments so far! The room was originally a sleeping porch I believe which is why it has concrete floors with a pattern in them. I'm attaching a rough layout someone made of the first floor. The green line shows the approx original outside wall of the house. The grotto was added on and hopefully will come off in the next few years to restore the original first floor layout. And here is a picture of the adjacent formal dining room.

Sorry to get off topic but... Yikes, all this criticism against kswl2 for being boorish, rude, thoughtless, and brutal in the first post for giving what was clearly stated (a couple of times) as just their opinion. Is everyone really so fragile? This type of response is exactly what I would want to hear, someone pointing out potential issues and problems that I haven't even thought about. I welcome them and I don't need to be tiptoed around so as to avoid hurting my feelings.

Yes, the chairs and table on the left are not in the room anymore. Those were from before I had gotten the bar. That room is new and I have just been ordering things to try them out and then returning. I do like the bar but thats really the only thing that I am tied to. I have no rug in there now and am looking for suggestions. I am as far from a designer as you can get. I do not have a good eye for these things, but love reading all the advice here. Such great ideas. Thanks!

I am going to say “no” to both lovely rugs because the prominent field, which gives the rug its life, will be covered by the dining table. The two rugs are rather formal for your furniture. Try to find a plain field with an interesting border. Remember to add 3’ larger, all around, for the correct size. You want to pull back dining chairs and have all four legs stay on the rug. I have never done anything with the dining room. Furniture and light fixture staying. I have taxes on the table, please disregard😬

Seeing the rooms, I think any of your choices could work. My favs are #2 and #3, but that’s just personal preference. :)

ETA: Oops, meant to ask what color paint are you going to use in there?

That’s a question for another day…lol. Once I pick the rug I will decide on paint color.

Very nice suggestions, and, thought I would throw in a different idea...plain. The dining table covers most of the rug, anyway, so why not put your pattern in the fabric.

This one is from Ballard, 8 x 10, Susan Kassler design, and on sale (big sale).

The fabric could be a paisley (which is a good coordinate with the Jacobean rug).

Bring the brown of the living room rug onto the walls in the dining room.
