kmcg - Good point about the safety bars. If this for an elderly you probably should install grab bars even with a walk in shower. We did that too for my MIL. Also, be sure to check your local codes about the drain. Some allow 1-1/2" drains as since many of us use low flow showers now it's not a problem. I have put a rubber flat stopper over mine some times when I feel I need a foot bath. Even after washing may hair etc, it doesn't get close to overflowing.

The people that bought our last MFH are planning on removing the garden tub and we have talked several times on their options of what to replace it with. Large stall shower or a regular tub or shower over tub. Sorry Summergardener I do not have an answer for you. My only thoughts would be the added weight.And maybe the small foot print of the claw foot tub feet. There might have to be something under each foot. I just do not know. Some one asked about the added weight of a large fish tank. I consider the added weight as I continue to mosaic on our furniture. Heheheh Silly me. Sure is fun though. an alcove tub is not finished on either end. I think the 'flange' is the back and side edges that touch the wall. That flange then goes under the finished wall (tile) so that water cannot get behind it.

Avoid any kind of wood. Infinity All Ultrex would is a good choice with a bullnosed stone stool and perimeter trim well sealed to the window frame. Avoid silicone if it will be in a poorly drained surface. Allow all surfaces to drain quickly if possible, put an exhaust fan close by, don't block air movement between the fan and the window face. Install the window as high and as far from a shower head as possible. Provide a grab bar under or near the window if possible.
