It thought I was sold on a walnut kitchen but I'm liking rift cut oak.

Ugh---not sure if I'm happy with walnut island:(
Comments (45)I think your kitchen is beautiful and the cabinets read white to me. Your top is beautiful but the person you need to please is you. I just went through a similar dilemma the other day. I am going to have a walnut top and my hardwoods are red oak. When they put down the stain samples I was so unsure. I like the look of a darker floor but I worried that if the undertones were different red (red versus brown) it might look as if I tried to match them and missed. I finally decided to go with natural stain. It looks a little pink right now but the flooring guy said the urethane will yellow and the color will change. I personally decided to go light on the floors because the natural stain seemed more " neutral", something you would just overlook. I hope that your new distressed and darkened top makes you very happy. Post pictures when it is done!...See Moreshow me your walnut and rift sawn oak cabinets
Comments (9)Both walnut and rift sawn oak are gorgeous, so I don't think you can go wrong with either. I have walnut cabs, have had them for about 3+ years now. I've been very happy with them. The grain is certainly the show piece of the kitchen. As cat_mom noted, they do lighten with age. I recently had a walnut island done for the kitchen, the new walnut is a fair bit darker than the older walnut. I would classify natural walnut as a medium dark rather than dark. I will try to take a picture tomorrow if you like....See MoreRift Sawn Oak - Now with Walnut

I am also in Wisconsin, love your cabinets, and would really appreciate if you would share the name/contact information of your cabinet maker. Thanks! Comments (57)Wow, those tiles will be stunning! Yes, great minds think alike lol. It’s nice we found each other, Houzz can be a lonely place when you aren’t doing a white shaker with marble look counters. There is absolutely nothing wrong with white and marble and when done right it’s beautiful- but it would be so so wrong with my house and my existing furniture and decor. My house is a 70s contemporary and since it has lots of natural stone, medium brown woodwork and exposed beams, the Mission style works very well with it. Having said that, I also thought a slavish reproduction of Mission/Arts and Crafts wouldn’t fit, but incorporating some of those elements was my goal. My parents were both antique collectors and a lot was passed down to me, so my decor is a lot of Mission but with some Empire, Eastlake walnut, and a few 60s-70s pieces thrown in the mix, in homage to my “contemporary of its time” house. My eclectic/eccentric style, for lack of a better term, isn’t something I see much in the modern HGTV world, but I often find inspiration in real estate photos from England, where I used to live, where being eccentric eclectic is a more accepted way of life :)...See MorePaul F.
