What commission do Big Box stores take on granite or cabinets?
Comments (13)Markup is a part of life desert dance ! Why are you so averse to paying it? What you should focus on is are you getting fair value for the price you are being charged on the product or service you are buying. BTW - all retail IS NOT marked up 3 times. Sometimes its only once depending on the distribution channel, and if you are talking about percentages , some things are only marked up 10-20% like appliances ! Also consider that " markup"allows you to walk into the Depot and browse their selection on tile, cabinet doors, countertops, and appliances for free. All those displays , lighting, brochures, rent, costs $$$. Now , you can easily find an outfit with lower overhead which might translate into lower markup, and it might not. You'll drive yourself crazy trying sort out all the costs that go into a renovation budget on top of the design decisions that need to be made. Do you question your mechanic's markup on oil or bolts when you get an oil change? You could save a lot of money if he bought all his oil when it was on closeout or March Madness sale at walmart instead of his regular supplier. How about the fees your broker/ IRA/ 401k charge to administer your retirement plan. And other accounts? Ever hire an attorney and seen what you are charged for a copy or a postage stamp? It's easy to nitpick pricing - there IS ALWAYS someone/where with a lower price. Why dont you tell us what business / industry company you or your spouse work in and let us compared its pricing with the rest of the market....See MoreLaminate Counter question
Comments (4)Cutting to size is easy. You will NOT be able to round over laminate. Laminate is a thermo plastic. Meaning, it has to be heated to be bent, and once bent it will want to stay in that shape. You can Clip the corner, and apply a cap to it, or you can ease the edge and apply a cap. To cut it you can use a hand saw, skill saw, jig saw etc. make sure you cut into the laminate. This means the blade will cut on the down stroke. Most skill saws cut on the upstroke, so you would need to cut from the back side. Same with Jig saws, tho you can purchase down cutting jig saw blades. I would put a piece of masking tape over the area to be cut, and just use a handsaw, following your line. Sand the end with a belt sander and if needed apply an end cap using contact adhesive. Good Luck !...See MoreKitchenette in garage apartment suggestions.
Comments (7)How fun to plan a kitchenette that doesn't need to store an entire kitchen's worth of pots, pans, dishes, microwave, blender, etc.... Changing the door swing on the garage entry door would be a good idea. Right now the door swings into the fridge when open, but you'll find it let irritating if it swings into the hall/door-that-goes-we-know-not-where. Then I'd build a fridge surround with a little extra storage. I think IKEA would be a great choice for cabinets. i don't know how high end you want your 24" range, but I just had to show you this one from Bertazzoni - isn't it lovely? And below it is a fully integrated Bosch 18" DW....See MoreWhat do you store in your laundry/mud/utility room?
Comments (13)My laundry room is only that; it's not a mud room or utility room. I have lots of shelves - hub built most of them and installed them. There are huge hooks he installed for me to hang clothes on (I hang and fold clothes as I'm taking them out of the dryer). He also installed a nice rod/shelf above the dryer so that I can hang or lay things there to air dry. Other than machines, hooks on the wall, and shelves, I have lots of laundry detergent, a jug of vinegar, a huge jug of fabric softener (one lasts more than a year), a box of OxiClean and Color Catchers for when I combine colors in a load (I don't do that often, but I have a thing about only washing full loads). And a tall kitchen size trash can which seems to stay full - I haven't figured that out yet. Mine is very utilitarian, but it works for me and is in a very handy location....See Moresheloveslayouts
