What is the height of the ceiling? This has to be taken into consideration because you also need to consider the size of the light which you are going to purchase.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll admit that the final stage of accessorizing does take the longest. Finding those "just right" things is a challenge. I'm always hitting the Goodwill looking for doo-dads, or stalking etsy, or fielding pieces from my favorite gallery (but I'm essentially out of wall space). The hardest thing about putting the header in between the foyer and the dining room was convincing my contractor not to center the opening. The one that goes into the living room from the dining room isn't centered, and I wanted to continue that in the foyer. I painted the interior of opening in semi gloss version of the wall color (actually, from the sample pot) and I like the effect. I really need to figure out my window treatments and get going on the accessories for the living room area. I think the foundations are good, but they need a little more layering. I'm not sure that the Neurology journal is striking the proper tone here on the coffee table. Also, we installed the arch into the kitchen, closed off the other side which was also open when we bought the house, and installed the pass through. Again, I think we are the only people who closed off their kitchen...but it had no "original" charm. The paintings seem high in this shot, but they actually are fine in the space. That said, the table needs something and the lamp cord needs to get handled In this picture, you can see the outdoor cushions/table that I moved inside so that I wouldn't have to scrub them after the gardeners did their work. And, I need a nice pillow for my banana leaf wing chair. It's looking kind of blah. So there's still plenty to be done on the first floor, but it's coming along and I'm happy with its direction. I know that more well-chosen accessories are needed, but I don't want to just slap anything down on every flat surface. But with white walls, getting the pattern/color of window treatments seems even more important.

Those will look awesome. I say go for it... I used 2 foyer pendant lights for my island about the same size and it looks nice. I do have a very high ceiling over the island - 17 foot vaulted ceiling. Several people use foyer sized pendants for the island. Love that dining light fixture!
