Recessed lighting layout, oddly shaped living room.
Comments (2)Thanks Patricia, I'll upload a PDF with the room dimensions. As far as ditching the fan lights, I tend to agree with you. I hardly ever use the fan lights, it puts off very harsh light. I can't get rid of the fan though, I live near Houston and it gets hot here in the summer! I planned for the recessed lighting to be more for an accent and ambient lighting, just to brighten the room a little. I'm installing caseta dimmers and will probably have them dimmed to 20% or so most of the time and will probably have the ones near the kitchen off most of the time, which is why I'm splitting the lights into 2 circuits. I'm also toying with the idea of installing individual dimmers or relays to control each light individually. But when I have them all on at full brightness I don't want a bunch of shadows, so that's why I'm having trouble with the layout. I'm just not sure if I have enough lights and I also don't want my ceiling looking like a mini golf course, lol. I really prefer 3000K lights, I like how they are close to incandescent bulbs in color and the ones I have are 80 CRI which is average, but they look really good in my kitchen. There were existing 6" cans in the kitchen and I put surface mount halo led's in that are 3000K and the color in the room is very nice, to me. Edit: I added dimensions to the original PDF in the link in my first post. Thanks!...See MoreFurniture layout for oddly shaped great room
Comments (25)It seems odd that all the suggestions have most or all of the seating with its back to the TV and/or the windows. I dunno, but I think I'd put the couch as in your first photo, and add a couple of chairs in that same zone = TV room. Then put a small cluster of chairs at the other end of the room as a conversational grouping (around a table) with the option to look out the windows or enjoy the fireplace....See MoreOdd Shaped Family Room-Need Help with Furniture Layout!!
Comments (8)I like your current arrangement. For more seating, you can use two longer sofas in the same arrangement. Or a sofa with two chairs as you have it but without the ottomans. That leaves room for a backless bench type of seating to face into the conversation area that wouldn't interfere with the TV. With any options, your seating area is rectangular, so a rug would be fine to use. You may have room for a narrow console table behind the sofa facing the tv, if you place a sofa there....See Morehelp with furniture layout for really oddly shaped family room
Comments (4)The stove is gas and we've never used it. I would love to tear out all the brickwork but the original chimney is walled off behind it so it would be a huge, expensive project if it's even structurally feasible. This house has a lot of projects and the main level is my priority so the wet bar will have to wait even though it would be great to have that done. Maybe I can find a slide to attach to the wet bar...they climb on it anyway...and then put the climber on the back deck if it will fit. My boys play outside a ton when we have snow, but 2/3 of the winter we have no snow and apparently it's not so much fun to play outside when it's cold, windy, and dry. We did have the room open for a playroom when we first moved in but then DH insisted on getting that sectional. I would have preferred just a couch and more open space. Maybe if I split the sectional up I can make the room more open again....See MoreKelly Dailey
