We built our new kitchen from scratch as part of a 2nd story addition. Given the space created underneath the stairway, we used that space for a small reach in pantry closet. However, the door is really in the walkway INTO the kitchen rather than inside the kitchen. Since our kitchen will be large (17 x 20) we already had the space for a pantry cabinet inside the kitchen itself. But our realtor friend told us that buyers really like to see a recognizable "pantry" regardless of how much cabinet space you have. So our solution? First, we had our builder trim it out as a coat closet, but he also trimmed it with adjustable shelf brackets and shelves which we will store behind a "secret door" leading to the awkwardly shaped but useful storage area under the stairs. So basically we got a coat closet that can transform into a deep reach-in pantry in about 5 minutes if needed. The "secret door" thing was easy. They started the drywall at the back of the back of the closet about 36" above the floor, created a big square hold at the back of the closet. Then the put some short hinged doors in to cover it up. We have a ventless Blomberg heat pump dryer in a smallish basement bathroom and I haven't noticed any particular heat or humidity issue. The cycle takes longer than a vented dryer, which I don't find to be a big deal. Humidity shouldn't be a problem with a condensing dryer, since the water from the clothes, by definition, condenses and drains into a tank or down the same drain as the washer water (ours does the latter, so no tank to empty). Also, I suspect that heat is less of an issue just because of the way the technology works. As far as I understand, a vented dryer adds heat through a gas or electric heating element; a heat pump dryer, on the other hand, just moves heat from one part of a coil to another, with the hot part heating air in the drum which is then blown over the cold coils to condense out the water. Since heat isn't actually being added, the hot and cold parts of the cycle should largely be a wash (ha, laundry humor). I'm not sure how condensing dryers work if they AREN'T the heat pump variety, so I can't opine on heat from that kind of a dryer.

Keep the closet. I would actually have someone make a built in closet in the hallway for the space to the left of the door(when in the room) to utilize that area under the slope of the roof and then just a flat wall in the room.
