I like these ideas but not sure if they will work in my space

Are you keeping the existing cabinets and are only looking to change the paint?

I'd think about the flooring first because it is going to be a big transition point and you want to get it right. Cabinet colors and styles are limitless. Nailing the right floor is going to be challenging. Are you keeping the stone wall in the kitchen? Will the dining area with round table attached to kitchen be included in the kitchen along with the wood window frames?

I know how popular open concept is, but I wonder if it will really be a value add in this case. Your space looks lovely and well balanced.

If I were to open up this space I would keep the trim and doors, match the cabinets to the trim and doors, and take the pecan flooring into the new space. Was thinking that I might paint the island to match the walls, but after looking at the space I think I would stick to the dark wood, light counters.

This would not be your modern white on white kitchen, but it would be rich and beautiful and something different than everyone else has.

The dark wood trim gives your space an elegance that is rare in todays world. Most homes have cheap, paint grade trim. Painting it isn't a choice, it is what must be done.

I rarely like kitchens open to LRS so IMO be careful what you are planning. As for the other questions IMO first find out if you can match the flooring somehow, None of yur onspo pics have your floor and I honestly do not see how they would work in your fairly formal home. Right now IMO the wall that is open to the round table area looks odd I need a to scale floor plan of the whole kitchen , breakfast room space If all you are doing is removing the rest of that wall you will open up a whole can of worms since there is a ton of electrical , venting and even water in that wall.

I plan to remove the stone from the kitchen wall and put in taller cabinets. I do have some extra wood flooring to extend into the breakfast area but would need to order more for the entire kitchen area. I thought tile would be a safer option for the kitchen area, but maybe it would look out of place.
I plan to buy new breakfast table and chairs in the future. I’m putting in a double island so plumbing and electrical will be hidden. I’ll have to discuss the cold air return that is in the wall with my contractor.
I wish other cabinet color options other than the red would work in my space. I wanted to make it more airy looking and pull colors from the fireplace stone.

We have an open concept main floor and flooring is all engineered wood for a cohesive look. We love it all open and find it warm and inviting. I would absolutely open your space up and fully change the flooring

I second the commenters who are against removing the wall. While having the kitchen open to the dining room is popular, having it open to the living room is not done nearly as often and would be more appropriate in a small house. For me I think it makes a house look like an apartment. While a new kitchen can be a showplace, do you really want to be able to see it all the time? If you have small children I can see the appeal, but they grow up really fast and I would think at some point it would become unappealing. Not having the floor to fix would help you too. Your front door and decor are leaning traditional, so a wide open floor plan isn't necessary. What style is the house from the outside? It doesn't look like the current kitchen fits the style of the house. While it's a lovely MCM kitchen, any of the pictures you posted look like they would fit better. I would just caution against gray cabinets as the gray ship has sailed.

Can anyone REALLY tell you what color to change your cabinets to? I think this is a decision that you have to make with your KD.

Are you REALLY going to be okay with losing half of your kitchen when you remove the wall.

You don’t lose have your kitchen you lose some upper cabinets and you reconfigure to create those spaces in base cabinets or back side of island.

I'd stain all the cabinets to match your trim.

If you are opening everything up it needs to be the same flooring. i agree with not wanting to see LR from kitchen - too much mess for relaxation! how and why are you planning a double island? i’m perplexed by how this is going to work…

Just my non-pro 2 cents. I have always hated my last home’s kitchen being very open to LR, DR. It’s horrendous for noise and smell control. There’s no escape. Your kitchen is very pretty and I think the cabinets would look nice stained darker.

A big YES to painting your door and window casings and trim especially since it is mahogany stained and likely not mahogany wood. They trim is just so different from your lovely pecan stained flooring.

Your home is traditional and fairly formal. Opening the kitchen to a formal living room and formal dining room seems inappropriate. The contemporary style of your cabinets doesn’t seem to work with what is going on in the other rooms. Do you like the layout of your kitchen? You really need the help of a professional designer if you’re going to start making big changes.

You asked about options for cabinet color AND material. Does that mean you are considering new cabinets, or just changing the color of the current ones?

I too would not take down the wall into the living room/dining area. Your fireplace wall is quite stately as is your dining area and opening up the kitchen to those areas would be doing a disservice to them.

I like an open kitchen so I will not disagree with you there. I also don't like red tones, so I don't think it's necessary to match things to your trim.

I do agree that you should try to have the same flooring throughout, if possible. If not, I would probably replace the tile to something that coordinated with your FP better.

Your family room is lovely and has plenty of lighter tones that would work well with a lighter kitchen. I like your second and third inspiration pictures and absolutely think they would go with what you already have, even if you don't paint your trim. I do recommend going with off-white cabinets over stark white. Make sure to bring samples of everything home, to look at in your lighting and with the items you already have, before ordering anything.

I bet you could find some stone tile for your backsplash that would coordinate well with your fireplace, too.

I am in the market for new cabinets the old ones are not soft close and the finish is failing and the style does not work for the home.
The living room looks much larger in the photo than it is in person. When we entertain everyone always piles in the kitchen and I’m tripping over every one. If we remove the wall it will be a nicer space to entertain.
I have narrowed down my cabinet color choices to off white and a natural wood stain but I am not sure if the island should be off white or if the kitchen wall should be off white. I want to pull the nature blonde wood tones from the hickory flooring and from the neutral color from fireplace stone.
I could add a cherry range hood to tie in the red trim and doors.
I was also wondering if it would be or possible to add a glaze to the red trim to tone the red down and make it more brown.
