Redoing bedroom after break up!

My fiancé and I recently split up, which is why the walls are so empty. A lot of the decorations I had were either photos of us or “building a life together” type of decor. I would love to redo the room, whether with new furniture or just decor, as part of the “healing process,” if you will!

As you can see from the little “ decorations,” I have now I am an absolutely horrible decorator. If anyone has any advice or ideas, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

First — so sorry for what you’ve been through. It’s a difficult upheaval and ordeal.

Second — you are not a terrible decorator!

Ok, a few questions everyone will need to know: what are styles you like? What feel are you wanting? What has to stay, what can go?

Ballpark budget? Is this a home you own or rental?

Have you seen any inspiration pictures you like?

My very initial thoughts without knowing more: a headboard, a different rug, interesting art, etc …. goals of bringing in some warmth and life, making it a lovely and cozy retreat.

ETA: If possible to edit your post — I’d take off the Remodeling tag and tag Design Dilemma instead. Lots more will see it that way. :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I plan on being involved with, but not dictating, the paint choice. It is afterall, paint and can be rectified easily. I was horrifed when she first told me she wanted a purple room, especially since I spent the last year redoing the main level of my home to have color flow through out it. Don't think this goes with my color flow, but oh well. I do really like the idea of a stronger wall and three toned down ones. Interesting and may very well be used. I can see where the purples could easily get clashy and glaring. And her room is so small, I don't want it to feel closed in and I worry that too strong or too dark of a color with give it that feel. She's leaning the most towards the black artwork with the white and purple flowers which I found funny because she's wanted to get away from the flowers in her room for so long. I told her we'd wait till we got more of the room together before she makes a decision on something for behind her bed. I do plan on having her involved. We are DIYers here and the kids are used to being part of whatever is happening. She's actually the reason my bedroom finally got done; she helped me tremendouly and learned priming, patching, cutting in, rolling in the process.

When I'm doing bedrooms, I tend to choose drapes and match walls to them, because our bedrooms get used a lot and the bedding wears out and needs replacing, and I'm broke and tired and can't redecorate every time I need a new quilt. Not such a problem with a guest room though, although if you select distinctive adventurous bedding then the bedding becoming dated could eventually be. When I buy plain drapes with no pattern I also like the look of drapes and walls matching perfectly because it makes everything else in the room "pop" more. So maybe if you find drapes and bedding at the same time... put one on hold maybe while you search for the other... then once you've got those picked out, choose paint colour to suit?

Great ideas! I like those colors of the year! I dont have a picture of everything in the room unfortunately because its being prepped for painting. (Not much in it) i was trying to paint before getting the bike and mounting the tv. The twin bed will always be in the room. Right now its across from the eall where the tv will be. Jilly, Thank you so much for your response, you are very sweet! I don't really know what my style is but I like neutral colors! I definitely agree with a headboard! U don't want to spend more that $1,000 as I have a lot of other places in my home that need remodeled as well. I found a couple pictures of some ideas! The carpeting is horrible, but I can't really afford to replace it at the moment!

I’ve been in many rentals with ugly carpet … the right rug will make all the difference!

I'm also sorry for your breakup. I'm sure it's hard now that you're having to also visually pull it apart.

It's not anymore but you might be able to find it. I give you some ideas of how to emotionally and visually move on.

I noticed one of your inspiration pictures had the bed head up against curtains. Would you be able to move the bed so the head is against the window? Then put the tv on the dresser. I find the tv overwhelming in the room and it would look grounded on the dresser. You could then hang that mirror vertically elsewhere in the room. I would start by moving your existing things around. You already have a nice base.

This is just one look, so many possibilities out there. And I don’t know what exact sizes and measurements you need, so it’s just a general idea. I like that it brings some warmth into the room and some interest with different patterns and textures.

All of these would be around $600. The rest could go for art, pillows, and other accessories.

Would it be possible to use the dresser under the TV and take the mirror out of the room? Then move the taller chest to the dresser wall? Or as nelliebean said, move the bed in front of the windows and TV over the dresser where it is now? And move the tall chest to the current TV wall? I think there might be a better layout than the current one.

These are colors in the rug … I think it would look nice to find a coverlet or blanket in the salmon or blue colors and use on your bed with the comforter/duvet folded down.

So even if you don’t like every single thing, I just wanted to show bringing in some softness, color, and depth. If you don’t care for the salmon or blue, you could bring in more grays or whites with my first mock-up above.

I’d get rid of the dark gray colors in the room (rug, pillows, curtains). And have more than one lamp so you never have to use the overhead light.

Your inspiration picture here would be very easy to do — Rugs USA has similar rugs, you could find inexpensive white curtains (Ikea, Ama.zon, Target, Overstock, etc), and then accessorize.

Just not all black pieces … rather warmer woods in whatever stain colors that appeal to you. Going by your inspo pics, it seems like you like the sort of washed wood look, which is nice.

Scour FB Marketplace, check Ikea, etc for budget-friendly things.

But if you like all your furniture as is, and don’t want to add new furniture to the budget, no reason not to keep it! It can certainly be worked with.

The schemes I show, and your inspo pics, would be fine with your current furniture.

It really is just personal preference. It could certainly work with the looks you like, but isn’t much different than what you have in there now.

I’d want something lighter and with a softer look, but that’s just me. If you want that one, we can all brainstorm and make it work!
