Thoughts on these plans? 8x13 rectangular master bath - big enough?

Has anyone done a master bath with these dimensions? Have photos? We are redoing ours and have some play with the dimensions because we are also adjusting closets. I’m just wondering is 8x13’ a large enough space to feel worthy as a master bath? The attached picture is the bathroom layout. The blue space behind the vanity will be a walk in closet.

The main features we are including are 1. A large double vanity with plenty of storage and built in hidden power 2. Wall hung toilet 3. Large walk in curbless shower with partition entry 4. Large heated towel rack and 5. Heated floors.

We are forgoing the large soaking tub. We don’t take baths and we have a tub in our hall bath for bathing children. I also don’t think one would fit in the master without making the room feel cramped. I love freestanding but we definitely don’t have room for one.

We also aren’t building a separate water closet for the toilet. I know some people do, but I’m going for the look of big open space to make it feel like a larger room than it is. I hope that’s not strange!

And the size of the shower would be 3’2” x 8 ( the width of the room). Could make it 3.5’ wide. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Seems like you can move the vanity to the right wall and square off the closet. More closet with no loss of function in the bath.

Sorry it took so long to get back...busy week at work and gardening all weekend :) I appreciate all your input and I know I need a visual aid, but all I have is my graph paper with my pen sketch LOL. I need to go high tech! After careful thought, I am considering swapping the porch and the laundry room. The house faces southeast, so the laundry room is currently on the southwest side and the porch is in the back, or the northwest side. Both are going to have to be rebuilt, so it's an easy swap at this stage. If I open up the room on the southwest side, I can have it open to the kitchen and get better light into both rooms. The laundry/pantry/mudroom can be on the back, with less light. This would allow me to put in a second door, from the hall bath to the laundry area, eliminating the need for the half bath (and saving some money!) :) The load bearing wall is between the two bathrooms, which means the master bath is not getting any bigger (without a lot of expense) and is staying about 6' x 10'. The hall bath is a much more flexible space. I can make this larger and have the claw foot tub and toilet on one wall (on the back) with a window over the tub. The hall door would be opposite the tub, the sink (now the counter could be 6' instead of 4') would be next to the hall door. The door to the laundry room would be on the left wall, between the sink vanity and the toilet. The shower in the master bath is more practical and although I wear make-up, it takes me all of five minutes to put it on in the morning, so no big mess in the bathroom. I work from home (and live on a farm) so a little eyeshadow, liner and mascara and I'm good to go! LOL Oh, I should mention the master bedroom is on the northeast corner of the house. As you come in the front door, the stairs are straight ahead. As you walk along the stairs, to the back of the house, the hall bathroom door is straight ahead (but all you'll see is the tub) to the right is the door to the master bedroom. You walk by the master bath, as you enter the bedroom "suite" if that's not too fancy a word for a fairly small bedroom. I am hoping to have a small screened porch off the back of the bedroom area. French doors off the back of the bedroom will lead to the porch, with just enough room for a few chairs and a small hot tub. That is the one thing my husband wants in the new house...besides dibs on the basement! Thanks again for all your help :)

I"m short on time, but wanted to post something that's been swirling in my brain. I think walk in closets are lovely if you have the space, but I just don't think you have the space; I'm pretty confident that the minimum recommended width of a closet is 5'. How about a walk- through closet to your bathroom? My guesstimate is that you could have 6' wide, reach in closets on either side of a 42" hallway. I've seen lots of pictures with a beautiful tub centered under a window and flanked by vanities, so I appreciate that look might be a priority to you. I just moved all that over to the other window. I tucked the toilet and shower around the corner. Depending on the location of the window, you might be able to have a pocket door, but if not, a wall would add a lot of privacy (avoid seeing the reflection of someone on the toilet from the entrance or the rest of the bathroom.) Anyhoo. Here's a rough drawing. If aging in place is a concern, I'd put the shower and toilet on the exterior or bedroom wall, so you have the option of creating a quicker route to the toilet (through the closet wall) in the future.

Okay lots of thoughts going on here, I love it. @Jessica @Andrea C So I'm convinced I need to keep the window for lighting and potential ventilation so that'll stay. My biggest challenge is currently the door opening because with the distance from the entry to the shower both swinging doors open are likely to intersect. Back to that in a second. The reason I have the toilet almost in the corner is because, I'm thinking about a bypass door which would allow the shower user to either go out near the wall with the towel bar, or even just grab the towel to try, or go out near the vanity. If it's me, probably both of those functions. Grab a towel, dry inside shower, then exit near vanity. If I'm able to do the bypass then from the shower door /glass on the toilet side I have exactly 24 inches with is minimum needed for clearance, technically 22 from curb but I'm not worried about that. Okay back to the door, I'm not sure if I can accomplish a bypass in that space having only a knee wall and glass on top of that. I'd rather not make that wall full height because it'll cut off the small space even more. So if no bypass, and I do a knee wall with glass on top, now I have fixed panel with regular sliding (I hope) or swinging. If I go swinging, I'll likely need a pocket door for the clearance, I'm okay with it on a master bath as opposed to a shared bath. Okay lastly storage space. 46" vanity isn't that large but the headknocker should alleviate a lot of this tension, no? Hence also why I don't want to move the toilet closed to shower, visual cutoff and restrictions I'm thinking. Also, the towel bar area, I could play with, I can do bar and hook combo or bar shelf combo, or swinging. In reality I could get away with 16" there, it just won't be centered to curb. It'll be centered glass to headknocker. As far as shower design, I'm thinking bench on both sides and recessed wall shelving on top of the bench, so likely 2 on each wall. Controls would be dead center, probably underneath the window. If I get the placement right, rain showers in front of the benches, so almost to the left and right of the door opening. I'm also thinking about in each (almost) corner placing handhelds. I'm going to take a breath now. Thoughts?

Sometimes it goes to brutal truth. There was never anything good in this set up.There won't be a significant improvement, unless you get over the sharing/togetherness aspect !! . I'd steal a foot, who cares, you're sleeping. Add a pocket door, .......and get a decent CLOSET.......seemingly LOST IN ALL THE ABOVE CONCEPTS OTHERWISE? Take bedroom two and get a real primary/owners suite, and give bed four an en suite bath. The house is a sixties/ seventies concept with too much..... stuffed in a too small footprint. Go big, or stay home : ) as the existing set up would never satisfy a future owner in any scenario.......and leaves you with MEH? Or the" kaching" route.The one where you bring in the pro designer and a contractor that pro designer recommends. . Where it is certainly possible to have whatever you want if that is tub, no tub.......etc and nine feet of vanity guaranteed. You consider the neighborhood, your length of stay............budget....all of it. Apologies quickie "art" ........you get the idea

What are your restrictions? Does plumbing have to be where shown? What is the window like, how far from the floor? Does it have to stay as shown?

Why the strange nook in the closet to the right? What are your closet storage needs (long and short hanging, heights, drawers, shelves etc)?

What are your bathroom storage needs?

I would not like that there isn't counter space with that sink configuration. I would make the shower deeper if I could.

I wouldn't like that bathroom. When I take a shower, I like hot water and a steamy shower stall and that big open shower would not suit me. The proportions of the shower just don't sit right with me, too long and too narrow. My shower is 42x60 and I can't imagine wanting anything longer than 72. A width of 36 is OK but no more narrow than that and 42 is quite spacious.

I might try a 42 by 42 area inside the panel and 30 inch opening for a total size of 42x72. Use the remaining two feet for a nice linen cabinet.

We recently remodeled master bath that was 71"x 17'. We used 7' of the 17' for large wet room with tub and shower. The vanity reaches from wet room for 7' with toilet at end. We installed a modern sleek stlye barn door mirrored on bathroom side with hardware on bathroom side to maximize space and maintain more traditional look in bedroom. We are totally happy with it.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Super helpful! Just doing a bathroom/closet remodel. House has a funky 2nd story 2x6 random bump out which you can see in the picture. Single small vanity, small shower, pink jetted tub from the 90s. We have some plumbing and AC duct restrictions as most remodels do… The current bathroom runs the entire span encompassing the plans I showed all the way to the corner of the house. And the remainder is an oddly compartmentalized closet with three doors that drive us crazy. We are gutting the entire space and starting fresh. Tying to make the large but awkward shaped space more useful! Wish us luck!!!

Here’s a thought: cut off the part above the red line and make it part of the bedroom. Or closet or whatever that room is up there.
