need help finding a new entry door and window system
First pic how how was initially built. 2nd and 3rd pics new door system put in 20 or more years ago.
Property faces south. Some people have been telling me that I should go with a mid-century modern entrance design.
It was mentioned that I should not go with a colour, especially a darker colour due to likely drastic fading. It has also been suggested that I do not install a steel door due to its absorption of heat.
I live in Ontario Canada so get all ranges of weather.
Should I be going white and fibreglass? Could someone suggest a front entrance system that would fit nicely here and complement the house.
I do t seem to be able to get help with any design ideas from Window and Door people near me.
I need some privacy or obscurity in the sidelights and transoms.
Don’t know if I should be going with the more block look in the original entrance, or if that would be best changed out and still be a mid century modern look?
I have no real idea how to start.

last monthWhat was there to begin with was so much better than what is there now. I think a solid front door since you have so much glass on the sides. The door/window manufacturer should have a couple options for obscured glass. Something reeded maybe? The examples I have are red, but there are other MCM colors that would be appropriate. Since your house is white you really have a lot of options.

Comments (66)I know you are waiting, but I'm going to put in a vote for the Kichler Ralston. I thnk the very strong, square lines of your house are plenty of linear design -- something with curves has more interest and the hanging lantern compliments the iron scroll work on the door. I like the rectangular lanterns very much, but they accentuate the straight lines of the house and the door itself, making the scroll work on the door an odd man out. The hanging latern wirh some curve brings it together. I also like that last lantern your DH doesn't, but I don't think it is right for your house. I can't put my finger on why -- contemporary -- a little too simple or delicate? Looks like it would be better against stucco rather than all the brick lines. You said you have other projects to tackle, but even if you didn't, I think it is good to look and leave -- come back at least once or twice. Comments (7)I don't mind the table and mirror and can't really think of anything besides art that would fit on that wall. Can't see the table details well but could it be painted? How about red to match your lovely door? What would say "fresh and cozy" to you for that space? Have you thought of a new light fixture? A runner and a larger rug in the entrance could look good. I believe a good one will be able to take your existing structure and simply change out the glass to something that meets your privacy request. last monthlast modified: last monthanything facing south is going to need maintenance. Wood would be a nightmare since every 2 years you would have to varnish it.
A factory painted fiberglass or a steel door will prob hold up a bit better. And if you have to paint it every 5 years, not a big deal. Some colors fade less than others. Red is prob the fastest fader. blues or greens might be a bit better. yellows too. You would use a specialty paint that has special UV blockers. that is going to give you the best protection.
the other alternative? white. is this really what you want?

last monthGet a factory finished powder coated steel door I live in Canada had colored steel dors in Calgary not problem facing south . One of mine was teal. I love the first pic I was thinking nothing to change and then you post the Victorian door no,no, no. I really do not think oyu need privacy with thetransom but probly heat and UV control which you can have with solar shades .I do not think a white door works at all.Since you like MCM this is my fave inspiration for landscping Check out the gray with the white windows and lime door , Awesome

get a good paint that is MEANT for exterior doors and it should last a bit longer. Glossy finish is also a better choice than a satin.
Are you getting new doors? that's a must. those faux victorian doors just do not work.
the original door was much better suited.
So, find the door first, and then you can pick a color.that bright Chartreuse door example, does not work on your style home w/this stone (and certainly not w/your current door)
If the stucco is staying the same, and you're getting a charcoal/gray color roof,
then just use one of the colors in the stone for the front door. It doesn't have to be 'green'. In fact, green, unless its a darker forest green/gray tone, wouldn't really work, even w/that roof.Since you want lighter colors, try one of these. The Breathless color or Software would be pretty
