Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Having a quartzite backsplash behind range, but tile on either side.

I’m sorry, no photos of our kitchen because the cabinets are still being built and items purchased.

We plan to have Taj Mahal quartzite countertops, I’d love for the entire backsplash to be Taj Mahal but there may only be enough for behind the 36” range, would it look good to have the quartzite behind the range and a tile backsplash on either side? We’ve purchased Paradiso Fenway in Sunlight tile for the backsplash, the actual quartzite slab looks great with it, the photo doesn’t do it justice. Mainly my question is (is it ok to have a solid surface behind my range with a tile backsplash under the cupboards on either sude if the range? is this done?)

Please post your dimensioned layout and your range manufacturer's instructions. You have more considerations than looks.

You might want to read up on how glass tile can change in color when installed and grouted. My parents installed a similar colored beige glass tile in their previous house and the sample was PERFECT ... but once installed it looked green instead of beige. Not bad enough to change, but not the look we were going for!

Here is the tile...I will lay them vertically behind the range. I bought some 2"x2" coordinating glass tiles to make up some of the space since these are not quite long enough (I have 30" from my range to the range hood although part of that is hidden by the 5" riser on my range). Yes, shelves do interfere with venting. If the venting is the correct power and design, it will still be effective, but you will have to clean the bottom of the shelf periodically, which can be sometimes be an acrobatic endeavor. All that said, I have a large, high, stainless steel shelf and I am not sure that I could get used to not having it, despite the cleaning issue. I keep my most used bowls and mortar and pestle on it and reach for them while cooking daily. However, I suspect that you have a cleaner aesthetic than I, so you may not desire that arrangement. Our GE Profile has a vent at the back too. But I can't say I have ever had a bunch of smoke or anything coming out of it. It almost doesn't seem to emit smells from back there. The oven seems so air tight that you can only smell what is baking once you open the door. And we have had to adjust to being careful not to get our faces too close when we open the door as the heat and moisture blast could singe eyebrows! So I am not sure what that part actually vents but it is an open vent. I do use this (see link) spatter guard when I am frying or making a tomato based sauce to prevent excess splattering all over everything. But I have still gotten tomato and grease on the backsplash and it has just wiped off. I don't leave it there and clean up as soon as I can. The product I used was recommended by our tile supplier. It is called aqua Mix Rapid Cure (Sealer's Choice Gold) Good for granite, marble, limestone, travertine,porous tile and grout. I only used it on our tile backsplash. Not on our granite countertops. This is it: Aqua Mix But I would test it on a scrap or clear it with your fabricator.

Thank you! I think I may have a solution....I found a trim kit that may resolve the gap behind the range so that we don't see the wall/ledger board. Won't know until the item arrives....sometime in mid October.

Since it looks like both are purchased, wait to test together and if in doubt, show pictures with them next to each other. (We bought our tile too early and hated the combination, but was able to exchange thank goodness.)

You’ll need a heat sheild to protect your stone behind the range, especially during self cleaning. The heat can expand the stone causing it to crack.

Check and see if your range has that option.

I’d use either one alone, not a combination of both, but it is personal choice.
