removing mulch - artillery fungus problem
Comments (9)Sorry rhizo but vinegar is commonly used, and even sold as a professional application, for both weed and fungi/mold eradication. It is even recommended for killing athlete's foot and toenail fungus. ;) USDA studies recently published now scientifically support what we organic growers have known for years. I have provided one link but feel free to explore further if you wish. ;) Granted fungi live within a variety of ph on either side of neutral. But they thrive on the alkaline side of the bar and are severely inhibited in acidic environs. Any alteration of their existing ph zone can defeat them - even going way to the alkaline side with baking soda will sometimes work. But I have found going acidic to be more effective. Besides, we are not talking about saturating the soil here (make note of that Mark ;), we are talking about spraying the infected mulch with a 2:1 mix of 5% Vinegar (the big jug at the store kind). 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar is a frequently posted recipe for weed killing and while the acidity it provides is lethal, it is quite temporary. Much more temporary than using pine straw or pine bark. You can go stronger but I recommend starting out with a weaker solution and see how it goes. Don't forget to spray the shot spots as well. 10% vinegar is sometimes available locally and if you use that use a 3:1 ratio to start with. I don't see any other plantings in the areas pictured but if there are plantings there Mark, please don't spray them. Rake the mulch away from them before spraying and then just saturate the mulch. But Mark - please also note the alternative suggestions too. Kimmsr suggested raking - weekly is my suggestion - to increase air and solarization exposure and look for pine bark/straw to mix in with the existing mulch as well for more long term effect. Good luck. Here is a link that might be useful: USDA Study on Vinegar...See MoreThe snow HAD melted...
Comments (10)No snow here, but I did get about 4/10" of rain over several hours. Certainly not a lot, but I was absolutely delighted to get it--the most I've gotten for a LONG time! I ran out late in the evening--in the rain--to put the rain gauge back out. Didn't do it earlier because I was afraid I'd break ANOTHER one if there was water in it and it got down to freezing, but it didn't look like it was gonna get quite that cold here, and after it had already been raining for about an hour, I got really curious and decided to chance it! The gauge had 3/10" yesterday morning, and I estimated the other tenth for the hour it wasn't out there! Everything was so "bright and perky" looking yesterday morning--it was wonderful to just stand and look at it! The wind has picked up like crazy around here now, and it will be going SLURP with the moisture I did get! Thank you, Wind!!! Sorry about your temps, Digit! I'd be dying in conditions like that too! I'm so glad it's been warm enough down here that I've been able to be outside much of the winter. Being stuck inside gets to me! But I am getting tired already of carrying all my plants in and out and in and out.......... Sixteen flats of swap plants stay outside but go up and down off of the deck where they're more sheltered most nites, and there's some more that I started inside plus the things I overwintered inside that are getting their daily dose of sun and wind now---and now I'm carrying the tomatoes and other veggies/annuals I've started in and out every day! Getting to be quite a project! Exercise is good for ya---they say!!! Hope you start warming up, up there soon--even if it's for YOU more than the plants!!! (I've been up to 80 already once this year! HUH???) Jennifer, is the wind (I'm SURE you're getting more out there than we are down here!) starting to knock the snow back down for you? For those of you looking for a rain gauge, I really love the kind I have with BIG numbers! I have it (about 3-4 yards) outside of my "garden level" family room window, so when I'm looking at it, I'm on just about the same level as it, and with the big numbers, I can pretty accurately see how much I've gotten even without going out into the yard to look at it. When there's water in it, it magnifies the numbers even more. And I get them at Walmart for only about $5 each---at least that's what they were last year! But when you get one--whatever kind you get--be sure there's no water in it overnite on nites when it might freeze! It's not very "accurate" when there's a hole in the bottom! ;-) For a while it was sounding like we might get some more decent precip in the next week, but looking at NOAA (which was down most of yesterday), it's looking less and less likely! But I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed! Fingers crossed, toes crossed, eyes crossed, Skybird Here is a link that might be useful: The rain gauge I use!...See MoreHow's your weather???
Comments (18)We are in the low 60s during the day and 30s at night. Oddly had a slight snow last week, very slight. I live at the base of the Rockies, the ski areas are getting a lot of snow. Last fall the leaves didn't change, they were frozen before turning. But this fall it is beautiful. Falling leaves feels like friends dropping by. The last 2 years have been off from the norm. Little rain and snow. Winter brought enough snow to wet the roads for slick ice in mornings. I have to get going and finish a few outside projects before the mystery weather arrives....See MoreThere's something about meeting CFers in real life
Comments (41)I remember the dinner for Ann and Moe--at the time I thought how courageous of you. Karen, It's a date! I was cleaning out some files and came across this list of things we learned at PFPP (Pigeon Forge Pajama Party). I thought it was worth sharing again. The campers were Lakeguy, RiverRat, Lowspark, Sheshebop, Peppi, Ducanoe, Wizard, Mustangs; all contributed to the learnings. Things we learned at PFPP: Bears eat people who smell like sausage NEVER tell May she has to pay for water with her sandwich and chips Greed trumps nice David blows a good tire U Turns are your friend Wine Away isnâÂÂt sold by the gallon The person who gets to eat first is the one with the biggestâ¦well you can figure that out There are no pigeons in Pigeon Forge Pancakes are king in Pigeon Forge Thomas Kinkade sucks If you hear banjos, paddle faster; if you hear a pig squeal, get a motor Make sure you rent a 2 holer Some things are better slower Karen just doesnâÂÂt get it But Raymond, we do have our clothes on ThatâÂÂs not a parking lot, itâÂÂs US441 through Gatlinburg 12 bottles of wine, bottle of Crown Royal, six pack of beer in two days is bad for the brain And the party had just started....See MoreFaron79
