I recently painted a bedroom set of furniture with a latex paint that was a combination of paint & primer. It turned out well. The main thing is to be sure that they are squeaky clean. This is what I did. First I used a deglosser on all surfaces. Then I wiped it down with TSP cleaner. Then 3 coats of the combo primer & paint in satin finish. Be very sure that the paint is thinned , if it is too thick it will peal & dent really easily. Thin coats with a good amount of drying time in between coats worked best. I also added something to the paint that slowed down drying time so that I could catch runs if they occurred & they did. Good luck if you decide to tackle them. It is not for anyone in a hurry.

I hear that you want a refresh, and you think painting can be diy'd. It CAN, but you really need to do a ton of research. It is a huge, time consuming deal to do a nice job, and it involves door removal, stripping, sanding, re-sanding, cleaning, priming, painting several coats, and best if they are sprayed. I have certainly read a few diy blogs from people who have done it. I have not heard of any product that would provide a decent job without sanding. By the way, you have to have a place to set up, like a garage, because paint needs to cure, not just dry, and there are specific curing times between coats. I encourage you to first read some reputable diy blogs first.

Now, you really don't need to paint your cabinets. They are a very nice, warm, neutral wood tone, and that is so current, and always will be. Gray? was popular a few years ago... but does gray actually go with your home? Not from what I can see in your photos. For an update, imho, I'd look at maybe some brushed brass knobs (though your knobs and pulls look nice to me).

I really like your counters. I might pull off that 4" backsplash and find a tile to match your counter and tile the backsplash--because I like the way that looks. I'd get a new chandelier, and update your window covering. I'd want to change out the range for SS, but that's a bigger expense and might not be worth it.

I'd remove the stuff from your counter and above the cabinets and you will notice your place looks quite refreshed!

I am not personally a fan of "accent walls", but I do like a pale creamy white color, or pale sagey green with your cabs.

If your kitchen was my kitchen, I wouldn't DIY paint the cabinets and I wouldn't put gray in that kitchen since you have warm toned woods (cabinets and I think the floors are a continuation of the wood we see in the adjoining dining space) and a warm white countertop. I'd remove everything from the tops of the upper cabinets, update hardware (perhaps), clear the counter tops to the daily use essentials only and freshen up the window treatment and rug, then call it a day.

For me personally, I kind of think I might like to choose a brass color, just to provide some interest since you have all the SS going on. I'm not a pro!!! So I defer to their better judgment and I hope some pros chime in here.

I agree, you could put on new hardware, and get a new ceiling light. I wouldnt choose brass, because, I dont like it, but, thats me personally. I would go with chrome, or brushed nickel, however, hardware choice, has to be your choice, and what you like. If you like brass, then that should be what you use. I dont see anything wrong with your cabinets. I would not paint them. They look nice like they are. The countertops, are nice, but, are very cluttered. New window treatments will help a lot too. Those there are only on the center of each window, so are a bit odd looking.

I see that you have posts for updates to your fireplace, your living room and your kitchen.

I am going to suggest that you stop looking at each room individually or you may end up with a hodge-podge, disconnected mess.

I always start with what must stay - either items that the home owner loves and does not want to change or the things that they cannot afford to change.

Pick your style, then pick your color palette, then plan how you are going to transform all of the spaces to flow from one room to the next with a coordinated style and color palette.

I would not consider a diy cabinet painting project at this time. In fact, the only thing I would consider for the kitchen right now is painting the walls, new window treatment, lighting and hardware.

The second, third and forth pics look like the kitchen, dining and living rooms that are all connected. Guessing the first picture is a family room on another floor.

Are the floors in the whole home the same? They look different, but that could just be the lighting/photos. I can't tell what the flooring looks like in the kitchen from any of your photos. Is it tile or laminate? Is the stone on the dining room wall and the living room fireplace the same?

One thing that will make a huge difference is changing the lighting throughout to 4000 or 5000k daylight lightbulbs. (I use 5000k in my own home).

In my mind the cabinets, flooring and stone are some of the elements that I would place in the must stay category. Looking at the dining room and the white sofa and the art you just purchased, I am feeling a more contemporary/modern style. Is teal one of your favorite colors?

If my assessment is right why not start with changing out the chandeliers/ceiling light in all three rooms to more contemporary fixtures that all coordinate.

Look at all the rooms in the house. Do the bathrooms need new lighting? Any other rooms?

Decide on the finish and the look that you want and get all of them changed at one time. Will save you a bunch of money compared to having the electrician come out multiple times to change one light fixture at a time.

I would probably move toward simple brushed nickel everywhere.

When I chose lighting for my home I used this collection for my office and sitting room.

and this for my bathroom (again not my house)

All the lights have the white and brushed nickel with soft curves.

Lighting is going to be key before deciding on color and decor.

The next thing I would change is the carpet in the room with the dark sofa.

Bring something in that is more modern, geometric/tropical/abstract, that has the teal color (if I am right about you loving teal). I am somewhat bold and may go with something like this.

I would find a great piece of art for over the sofa and over the fireplace and a centerpiece for the dining room table that has these colors.

On the mantel I would use just three pieces - vases, candles, sculpture that are light in color - what you have now blends into the stone. You need contrast.

I would use a teal or green for the kitchen walls.

Now all three rooms are coordinating. Clear off the little stuff over your kitchen cabinets. Too small. Pick a couple of large bowls, vases that again are light and truly interesting if you want to add something to the tops of the cabinets. They can be left bare.

If needed you can change the wall color of the other two rooms. They seem yellow now, but may be perfectly fine once you change the lighting.

I also suggest you read some articles on how to pick the right size and how to hang art. 5" above a sofa or table, eye height for walls where it is not anchored, 2/3 the width of a sofa. . ..
