Hi, I grew up the NY Metropolitan area and worked at JFK and LGA airports most of my life. For the last 14 years I lived in CT on a small âHobbyâ farm of 7 acres. Iâve gone from owning 7 acres with 6 outbuildings of various sizes and functions to an apartment that is 900 sq. ft. in size. Iâm now living on Long Island until my lease expires at the end of this coming April. Iâve experienced both ways of living. Iâm a 68 years old and live alone. My son and three grandchildren live on Long Island while my daughter and three grandchildren live in Arlington, VA. I plan on moving to VA to live âNearâ her and her family. I know near is a relative term. Iâve looked at the map time and time again and Iâm at a loss. Iâve thought it might be sensible to live near either of the two commuter train lines so I could visit with her or spend some time in Wash, DC at the various museums without the hassle of notorious heavy traffic. I have no idea of the communities to visit when I go to VA in February to look for a place. Iâm not looking for a large place. Actually something the size of where I am now. A one bedroom or something like that would be fine. I prefer a mixed aged area and do not want to go into an over 55 community. Iâm also wondering is realtors are used to find rentals or if itâs something you seek out on your own. Comments would be appreciated.

Yes, we use AC here from April through September. This year we even used it some in October. We will need to replace our electric heating system, also. The one we have now is resistance heat and we would go to a heat pump. There is no gas line to my house. Well that stinks. I would call the gas company to see if they have any plans to bring it to your area. At my last house we had electric heat which was a big turn off, we immediately changed it in the spring adding central air. We just replaced our gas furnace 2 weeks ago. The whole job was around $5,000. We called a few places, it was ranging up to $7,000. Be sure to look in the phone book to see if there are any coupons, also call the electric company to see what they offer. We priced cultured marble counters yesterday at Home Depot just to get an idea of price. For the master it would be about $300.00 plus the faucets. For Silestone, which we have in the kitchen, it would be about $600 to $700 plus the cost of two undermount sinks and two faucets. It might be worth it to get Silestone since it certainly is a more WOW look. Even in lower priced homes people like nice kitchens and baths. What do you think? We just did custom counters in the bath & kitchen, the price you got sounds good. Pretty sure it cost us about $3,000 total, we didn't get anything fancy.

Re: refrigerator. Last house kitchen was so horrible if someone walked into it I had to stop work and sit down until they left. Never entertained (a first in 12 apartments/houses, some with 75 yo kitchens). My kitchen designer told me first you locate the fridge because almost everyone coming into your house eventually goes to your fridge for water/ice etc so it should be on the side of your kitchen near where people congregate so they don't walk through your work space. I had some reservations because my fridge was visible from front door since that was my only option that fit that. Key issue to making it the MOST functional kitchen I ever had. Consider the flow then once you do..go with what works for you. Re: island. If you aren't 100% sold on it, consider options ....I like to look at the people I'm eating with, and needed some addition storage and some visual blockage from dining room (dirty dishes you know). My island was cabinet depth with trash bins, sink then dw then bumped up to bar height at end and up the other side with 12" cabinets (didn't have room for cabinet depth but I would do at least 14" since too many platters, bowls and small appliances are 12" and didn't fit). Top of that was great for entertaining/buffet or appetizers. On the opposite end the granite top (counter height, easier for kids, elderly, short and mobility challenged ) ballooned out in a 3/4 circle (straight on the sink side due to space). We easily fit 5 stools and all the serving dishes in the center and we got to look at each other and talk...highly recommend.
