which railing mock-up do you like best?

Disclaimer: the balcony part is real and the rest I drew in procreate to get an idea of the two options I have. There’s more to the rail (there’s a landing and then another set of 7 or 8 stairs going down to the entrance of the house) but I haven’t drawn those yet. Just curious what people think of these options. And yes, I know the measurements and dimensions are really off but it’s just the style idea.

I like the first one because the top part connects with the part going down the stairs, but I think there is a more elegant way to do this. I imagine it's just hard to show it in the software. Your contractor should have ideas about how to do this. There are wood connector pieces for this purpose.

I like the first rail that has the connector pieces holding everything together. As for the spindles, please be sure they are spaced so that a child cannot get his head caught between them. You may not have children in your home now, but building codes are supposed to be such that the spindles are spaced at certain intervals to provide safety.

No need to add anything on top of a corectley installed torch down modified roof with all needed flashing those things are a done deal for 20/30 years or so. We lay 2x acq stringers 16'' on center in the direction of the flow with a strip of modified under them,screw decking to the stringers,not past them into the roof. Dap out the rail posts 1 1/2 x however wide the rim joists is,bolt the posts to the rim joists.The Dap out lets the post sit on top of the decking. Its a good idea to figure out what kind of surface you want to walk on a little bit ahead of time, for sure dont plan on walking on the roof. Not really sure about the siding thing, flashing needs to be behind it and over the top of the roof or melted to the flashing by another strip of modified. J.

The post I mentioned would not be at the bottom tread so the design of a continuous handrail would have to bypass the post to get to a newel at the bottom tread and there would need to be a guard at the new opening whether it be solid, balusters, etc. At first glance it seems a potentially messy solution. Perhaps the handrail could be at the other side and the guard could terminate at the post. The bottom tread should have had returns at each side. Its looks like a abasement stair in the entryway.

@hallettco Thanks for your comments. I realize LED tape or inset bars using an under-cabinet skin are the most popular approach right now. We have some special needs for switches and receptacles to be located under the wall cabinetry, however, and will likely be using the Legrand Adorne under-cabinetry lighting and receptacle system, so in our case the under-cabinet cove is a necessity. I've never had light rail molding in a kitchen and was really looking forward to it, so the discovery that our cabinet maker doesn't usually use it, on top the fact that many modern kitchens are skipping it altogether, has been a disappointment.

OK, you all have convinced me to eliminate the oak look of the risers. While I'm too conservative to paint them, I'm thrilled with the many options for stick on riser decals that can be readily removed, including one with the pattern I've been nuts about for ages! It's called Astra, here. BUT -- back to the newel post/handrail for the upper section of this stairway.....previous comments were that we don't have the open wall for the spindles and we have no place for a newel post. I need to understand if the change I want to make isn't feasible, when it seems to me like it should be...please helps!

@kandrewspa this railing has been such a trip. We don’t love the guys doing our railing but they have the deposit and we also don’t have time to start looking for new railing installers. I have a list of why I don’t love these guys. I wanted a smoother rounder railing also but unfortunately I don’t think they have the craftsmanship or talent to do it. They’re simple, get it done quick guys. They know how to install a safe railing but it’s gotta be this square wood style. Really bugs me.

The first one but the balusters have to be close enough to not allow a tennis ball through, so you'll likely need twice as many as you show.
