wood splitting in island

The wood is splitting on the sides of island . Finisher is supposed to come and stain tomorrow.
I'm worried there is something wrong with the wood or construction. Or is it due to humidity etc .

Countertop is on and I'm not sure what to do? Wood filler but unsure if it will take stain ( we are staining a dark)

That is way to much cracking for wood filler. That wood is destroyed and needs to be replaced. It may have been a bad piece of wood or it could be other issues. Not enough info to really tell.

Wood doesn't split that perfectly for that long. That appears to be an edge band/repair that was improperly adhered. Fixable, but not with wood filler.

Yep, unless the wood is fairly clear (free of knots) and straight grained then it will not split very nicely. The tool you want to do this with is called a froe. It is used predominately for splitting cedar shake shingles. This is not the only tool that will do it, but the easiest. Pooh Bear

Been using that for years. If the end is getting loose, e.g. pitchfork, etc. immerse the end in a bucket of water, it will swell the wood and nice tight fit again.

You're not going to to be able to stain those dark shakes a light color, or "wash off the old color." You could paint them, but that will take a lot of prep and priming, and cedar shakes are notorious for bleeding through paint and for causing rusting around any exposed fasteners which will also show through the paint. I think you have the following choices: 1. Learn to love the traditional look you have 2. Paint them, spending a lot of time on prep, and hope that you don't end up with appearance problems later 3. Remove them and start over

Is this new construction? If it's new, I'd be pretty upset about it being cracked like that.

When did the split show up? Was it there before the counters were installed?

When the counter people installed my counters (or attempted to), they tried to turn the slab while it was sitting on the cabinets and they split the cabinet on the peninsula's end cabinet similar to what you have -- although I don't remember it being that long.

They tried to fix it but it looked terrible (IMO). In the end, they agreed it was not a good fix and replaced the cabinet (at their cost).

Does it go the entire height of the cabinet? If so, I think Joseph may be right.
