yayyyy for chewie!!! chances are good you can stop using the cone once the sutures come out. i dreaded having to use one when one of my past dogs had to have acl repair surgery. found this idea on another website and it worked so well for her!! i'm not sure how big chewie is but it might be worth a try. of course, if it's the front feet, it probably wouldn't work as well. it's just thick bath towels wrapped tightly and secured with duct tape...

I forget, what kind of animal is Chewy? They now make all kinds of soft collars; perhaps inflatable, or soft fabric for both cats and dogs. They seem to work very well and are not intrusive.

Yep...they have inflatable collars for dogs....maybe next time. Sounds like your in a good place....and so is Chewie! Glad the tumors are benign....whew...no worries.

Our Rottie really liked her inflatable collar after her spay last year.

Good news is she's gaining a brother and a sister this weekend. A friend recommended us to the present owners. They're thrilled to have found a good forever home for their dogs. I'm happy she will finally have a canine pack. They live a few states away. They are driving out with the dogs and all their gear and should be here by tomorrow. Two labradoodles from the same litter. They are two years old. So we've ben rearranging our home for the past few weeks to accommodate 3 large dogs. Let the fun begin.

Talk to your vet because while the collar is needed the first few days some animals, dogs and cats, are not lickers. I had a dog that was frantic when wearing the cone and the vet said it could come off but watch to see if the wound was being licked. It was explained that the dog would probably lick or at least explore the area for a minute or so. If it continued, I was to put the cone back on. She licked once or twice but never needed the cone beyond that. First few days I did put it on her at night.

Wildchild, I'm considering getting Chewie an older brother or sister. I don't want a puppy, well, I but I don't want to take care of a puppy lol. I just want to play with it and give it back to his/her parents. lol.

OP, my vet says the same thing!

we had an awful experience with our dog. he got neutered, we took the cone of after about 4 days just give him a break for maybe a 1/2 hour. we were watching him, he went up the steps, we were in the kitchen making breakfast and did 'lose' track of him and in about 1 minute or lesshe had 2 stitches bitten through! he had to back under anesthesia so he could re-stitch!

that fast they can open their stitches, it happened so fast!!

Please don't let happen to you! keep the cone on! not only did he have to go under again, but the cost and adding days onto his recovery... ugh what a nightmare!

What happened when the vet told me to remove the cone but watch was a wound on her side had to be stitched. She was so frantic to remove the cone she broke one of her back toes trying to remove it. Once it was removed she calmed down but allowed me to put it back on her at night. The toe later had to be removed because it caught on everything. Each dog is different so it depends on the experience of the vet.

Those plastic cone collars are the worst! Our kitty had to have one of those twice, and both times he couldn't see where he was going. His little head would rock side to side to try to see what was where. The second time, I finally wised up and got soft collars from Amazon. Here are some examples:

For the one pictured above, I recommend putting it on so that it goes down over the shoulders and back. That way, the animal (cat or dog) can still see, eat, drink, etc., but cannot get to the stitches to lick/chew them.
