Design Dilemma Flooring Bathrooms

help with grout decision black tile

Should we go with dark charcoal grout color (as shown in sample pic) or a lighter grout (haven't sampled yet)? I don't mind the imperfections showing as I like that look. Included an inspo pic but obviously know it's filtered a bit and the tiles aren't a brown tint.

I'd finish the tile installation and then choose a grout, once you've see how the light plays with it... you may change your mind.

Let me put it this way-- there IS a way to do it, but it's not easy. To tell you the truth, I'd have to talk to your installer and explain it to him. First I need to know though-- is he using spacers to set the floor, or is he gridding it out with chalk lines? If he's using spacers, then it's useless for me to talk to him. The only way it'll work is if he grids the floor out, and even then, if he's giving you a ration of crap about it, he's right-- it WON'T turn out right.

Unfortunately our 2 week renovation is at least a full week behind schedule, but at least that meant I had an extra day to figure out grout... I did a sample of the Laticrete "Smoke Grey" and it's the one! I don't know if it's just the specific tile we're using or something, but the "Silver Shadow" looks so much better in the pics I've seen on this forum than it did in my sample. @Bill--Thanks for the info! I've read so many of your posts and the FAQ's and they've been invaluable in this process! This afternoon I begin the quest for your recommended sealants. :) Thank you all for the photos and the links. They're beautiful, and were really great references. And they made me really long for the end of this project! So now what do I do with three almost full boxes of varying colors of grey grout that I don't plan on using? Ha!

The dark grout looks like it would provide enough of a contrast. I love it! Too light of grout might highlight the pattern too much. I worry it would overwhelm the space visually.

The tiles have a shine to them? If you did black grout then you would have shiny black tiles and matte black grout. I'd want the tiles to look darker than the grout and not lighter.

I'd use a grout that was light enough to highlight the pattern in the tiles. Speaking from experience, dark grouts often look good on day one, but can pick up minerals over time and start to have a whitish cast to them. And really light grouts can also show some discoloration if they are paired with really dark tiles. Since it's not uniform, it can make the installation look non-uniform. This is not an issue if you pick a grout that isn't at the extreme ends of light/dark. Also, whatever you do, using epoxy grout can lessen or prevent staining issues.
