how deep should a floating shelf be?

Hi! I am getting ready to order floating bar shelves for above a buffet cabinet in our kitchen but I’m not sure how deep to make them. They will be about 2 inches think and about 63 inches on to match the cabinet underneath (as you can see from the mo k up on our wall) but I can’t decide on an 8 inch depth or 10 inches. The cabinet underneath is about 16 inches deep and the shelves will hold liquor bottles, glasses and random decor. Thanks for any suggestions!

First, decide what you'll be putting on the shelf.

Pull out all the items and arrange them on the existing cabinet.

Pinterest shelf arranging decor will help to make an attractive look...

I’ll be putting liquor bottles but not necessarily against the wall. I’d like to make the shelves deeper but don’t want it to be too much with the depth of he cabinet underneath.

Mongoct, that's a good idea to just do a deeply recessed toekick to simplify cleaning if we stay with just 5" below the vanity. The room the vanity will be in is 6' x 6' (the shower and toilet area is separated by a pocket door). The look I am going for is clean and modern, but still tranquil and spa like. I will consider the under-cabinet lighting. Pharoah, thank you for posting that picture of your gorgeous vanity. I love your wood grain. It is very helpful to see pictures and know the measurements. I am afraid I will not get the look I am going for with less than 6". I can probably reduce my drawer section to 28" to get 7" below. I was originally planning on having 5" toekick drawers to store the scale, extra boxes of toothpaste and lens solution, etc., so I am really reducing my storage a bit to get a look if I go this way. Form vs. function is a constant battle. I am doing a wall hung toilet in the adjoining room, but that gives me both form and function as it will be easier to clean around and the in-wall tank frees up floor space in a not-large room.

My 18 x 36 rectangle is 3ft -6 ft, which is great for adults. In fact, because I don't have kids, if I did it over again I'd seriously consider a 4.5ft end-to-end since I mainly like to swim laps and float. I think these shallow pools are sometimes called sport pools. I had no desire for a diving board (noise+danger). But my friends' children always say they wish it was deeper so they could dive. Honestly, even if I had kids I'd prefer it shallowish bc. I can ban diving (which also discourages running) and if a rescue is needed it's much easier to haul out someone quickly. I don't care for pools that have a steep and sudden slope into the deep end...but your pool sounds large enough to avoid that. Kids would call me a party-pooper I suppose, but the safety of my guests definitely factored into my planning. good luck!

How deep is the MW you are getting? Add a few inches for air clearance to your MW's depth (check the specs) and you should be able to calculate the depth you need. Check the specs for the types/sizes of MWs that are similar to what you would like and go from there. When I need to know general dimensions of appliances, I usually start at a site like AJMadison - they have a large selection and decent search functionality. You might also post this question on the Appliances Forum, perhaps you'll get a general answer from the folks over there.

@live_wire_oak We understand to pre-build fixed shelf support on the stud or frame during construction, before the plaster board being finished. The problem is the shelf may not be aligned with the wall cabinet door. So we want to find some hardware accessories or solution to fix the shelf after walls are finished.

We have both (well, 7" and 11") and they are both good for different uses. We keep mugs and coffee supplies on the 11" deep shelves and spices and oils on the 7" deep shelves. I would mock up what you want to store and see if 8" works just as well as 10"--e.g., if you can fit two bottles deep on either but can't fit three on either, then might as well do 8", but if those two inches are the difference between getting an extra rowsof bottles or glasses, then go bigger.

Thanks! I wasn't if there was some sort of ratio between bottom cabinet and shelf that was typically used in this situation but it sounds like it's based more on shelf use than anything.

IMO nice glass door cabinets are tons better than open shelving and I aslo do not think liquor bottles are attractive decor . use the glass door cabinets for your glassware and save yourself from having to wash glassess everytime you have a party
