2 cold-air returns in small apartment; can I block one?
Comments (2)It sounds to me like your duct system has leaks that cold air is getting into your system. Even if your ductwork is in concrete it should not drop your air temp that much unless cold air is getting in also. I would start with temperature readings of the return air temp at the return compared to the actual return air temp at the furnace. I would then check the supply temp at the furnace right after being heated and compare it to the supply temp. You might have to put some small holes in at the furnace so don't forget to seal them....See MoreSmall simple farmhouses-bathroom off kitchens-anyone have?
Comments (20)My older sister lives in an 1850s farmhouse which has a bath off the large kitchen. The door faces the basement entrance in a very small hallway which leads to a bedroom. It is full sized, but only about 8x10. Spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with them, and it really wasn't a problem. The other half of the kitchen serves as a dining room. If you want weird--my own house was built in 1907, with a pantry and small back porch--neither of which was converted to a bathroom. However, there is a full bath upstairs with original fixtures, and a half bath (well, a sink with a wooden counter, and a toilet enclosed with beadboard planks under the stairs), but the strangest of all--the only closet on the first floor--an alcove in the hall next to the kitchen, and facing the basement stairs and side door--had a toilet installed for the convenience of a previous elderly owner! No door either, just a curtain rod which had a shower curtain on it when I bought the place. My very first task: to remove the carpet from the hall floor, then remove that toilet and make it a closet again! Despite this being done 21 years ago, I still have the 6" drain hole in the floor, because my cats love to stick their heads through it to watch me do laundry in the basement! :)...See MoreMix Butcher Block and Oiled Soapstone Laminate in Small Kitchen?
Comments (4)We are in the middle of new $1K makeover of our kitchen, and are installing laminate countertops in Basalt slate and a large black topmount Blanco sink. Our new backsplash will be faux aged-copper tin ceiling panels. While I can't speak to mixing wood and dark countertops, I have oak cabinets and lots and lots of wood, and we love the look. I have a few pics you can see now, and will try and post more tonight if you want to see the installed sink. Comments (12)I don't mind the bookcases the way they are. If you can swivel the TV stand, I'd leave it as is; otherwise, on that same wall on an arm should allow both uses. The two chairs look totally lost in the space, however, like someplace you'd use for a kid's time-out. I'd go for a couple of armchairs that you'd actually want to sit in to read or watch TV, or one armchair and a loveseat under the window.. Put a table lamp on the small table, or better yet, get a bigger table that would extend forward into the room between the two chairs. Try to create the feeling of a place somebody might sit to talk to the chef or to talk to another seated person......See MoreTLC Home And Design
