Marble niche shelf. Opinions?

This niche is part of a walk-in shower composed of 3x12 polished marble tiles. The pre-tiled niche was originally 12"w x20"h x3.5"d (Kerdi Schluter). However, the finished measurements are 10"w x 17"h x 3"d (3.5"d with pencil liner). The height was reduced to be proportional with upper and lower grout lines, and width reduced so that we have 1" cuts to right side of niche rather than 1/4" cut. This height and width reduction, of course, could have been avoided if contractor planned ahead when setting niche into studs. The niche depth was reduced to keep the walls tiled with full 3" cuts, rather than a 3" and .5" cut.

The contractor today sent the attached photos, which is a result of him using his own imagination. The difference between the photos is a 3" shelf vs 3.5" shelf that's flush with the bullnose pencil liner, which seems more proper. Taking into account aesthetic considerations, the shelf should line up with the second grout line from top down, with the upper pencil liners resting on the shelf, rather than a corner cut around the pencil liners as shown in the photos. The alternative to the marble shelf (5/8", same material as the curb top) is to sandwich two of the field tiles (3/8" thick) to use as shelf and apply the pencil liner (half inch thick) as the face. To make this work, the thickness of the sandwiched tiles would have to be sanded down. What do you guys think for best outcome here?
