What are these peg holes above the fireplace mantle?

We have a 1980s contemporary home with an angled cathedral ceiling. There are peg holes in the vertical beams that surround the chimney. If connected they would be angled. Any idea what they were used for?

Possibly existing holes in reclaimed timber?

Reclaimed timber would be a bit unusual in a house of that vintage so possibly this isn't original to the house and was added more recently.

Those are beautiful pictures, forhgtv, but I have one very similar to the first one, and it doesn't look right with the black and white toile lamp shades. It competes with them. Of course, I could move the lamps elsewhere BUT they look no nice on the mantle, and I just love them. Kitch n kat, the reason I mentioned a clock was because I watched an episode of Clean House, in which Mark Brunetz used a large clock over a couch and also a grandfather clock in the room. He is the one who said there are no rules about how many clocks one can use in a room, but you may be right about it being overkill. Could you (or others) HELP ME find a suitable round iron grille (in black) that would work? I like that idea. It can't be over 23 or 24 inches in diameter. I hadn't thought about a stained glass window, but I happen to have one. Trouble is, the squares are red, white and BLUE. It would be wonderful if they were red, white and black. I appreciate your help, guys.

Drilling holes above my gas fireplace in a condo.

So I wanted to hang a little multi-photo frames holder just above my gas fire place. I screwed in 2 screws about 1.5 inches long. First one went in fine. With second screw a little over an inch deep, I heard what sounded like a light whistle or humming sound which immediately stopped after I stopped drilling the screw in further. So my question is, what could it be and if it is safe. My fireplace is turned off for the last 4 years since it is on second floor and house is generally warm enough to not turn it on. Pilot light is off and there is an electric switch to turn fireplace on/off. Wondering if the screw just touched some metal sheet or actually pierced through some pipe. If there was a air/gas leak, I assume the whistle sound would be continuous. Attached photo of the layout. Please help. In the attached photo, 1 is the switch to turn fireplace on/off. 2 and 3 are the holes where I put screws in.

I would definitely hang it higher, and it does look good framed. Either way, get rid of the floor vase. Is it possible to move that brown furniture on the left away from the fireplace? The fireplace needs breathing room, as much as possible, if you can't move it. Moving the picture up is the most important consideration. The mantel does not need any other decoration.

What size mirror over fireplace with no mantle?

I would consider refacing that fireplace with something to go to the ceiling as for the mirror always think about waht is reflected when you hang a mirror , most of the time nothing worth seeing twice so look for art a much nicer choice and hang the mirror in an entry or somewhere else.

Doesn't look like reclaimed wood.

It's possible the previous owner had something unusual hanging up there.

I can guess as well as the next person...I will guess they hung a collection of little treasures the previous owner wanted to display. Can you ask your realtor what the previous owner had there? Maybe even ask the previous owner?

Is it a sloped ceiling and if so are the pegs parallel to it (if you matched them up)?

Assuming reclaimed material...possibly core drillings in the timbers to remove spikes, bolts, nails prior to being resawn?

Do you love all that wood trim around the fireplace?…is it possible to remove it?..it seems a little distracting from the other features in the room…
