Off center front door
Comments (36)It seems to me that the plan needs to be revised. The center bearing wall needs to be retained where possible or posts shown in the bathroom, pantry etc. As for the off-center front door, I would center it, add sidelights, add wood columns and find another location for the hall closet. It doesn't have to be next to the front door. I would try to create a more formal entrance to the dining room. I would also move the door to the bathroom to the hall out of sight of the dining room for the comfort of guests. Is a shower really needed for this floor? I don't see a guest room....See Morewill this front door and window placement work?
Comments (6)Hrm, have you read 'what not to build'? It's a great reference for things like this. Unfortunately I don't recall everything from my last read through it, but I do know that your ground level windows shouldn't have shutters as drawn - the shutters should easily be sized so that they could actually close over the glass, or be omitted altogether. Also, it appears you might have a few too many finishes - as I see brick, a different type of brick? and siding on your gables. As well, the little arched window on the house seems separate from the rest of the window styles, and so sticks out a bit. Do you need the shutters on the top row of 3 windows? I think it might look better without them?...See MoreAny Thoughts on This Beautiful Contemporary ?
Comments (28)That second house is just poor design. Bedrooms stuck anywhere. The dining room larger than the living room and stuck in the middle of the house so it becomes a passage way. While in the dining room you can look right into the guest bathroom. Yummy. The vestibule to the master meaning you won't even be able to get your furniture in and then it's harder if you're ever using a walker to maneuver. Having to walk through the dining room with laundry and around more corners. Now think about doing that carrying laundry while maneuvering a walker or even being a bit unsteady on your feet. The master barely large enough for a king bed and 2 side tables. Can't vouch for a dresser or chair. A WIC you have to go through the entire bathroom to get to. Now imagine you're older, forgot your sweater and are ready to go out for the evening. The powder room toilet up against a wall in the kitchen? YUCK! Your laundry room also being the entry from the garage? So each time you enter your new home, you have to walk past your laundry area? Instead of entering a nicely designed mudroom space? If you have a special lot, why would you want to plop down a generic plan that really works for no one versus working with a person of design talent (architect) to create a house that will truly amplify your beautiful site and help you to live comfortably in the house well into your golden years? Take what you like of design one and two (I'm thinking it's the natural light and the more contemporary feel) and work with an architect to create a unique home for you and your loved ones....See MoreNew build/log home: Exterior light/doorbell placement
Comments (22)chicagoans...thank you so much! And those pictures are great! I just realized the first picture I uploaded doesn't show the tape marks for the lights on the prow...oi :) The whole reason I posted....but, we have planned two up/down sconce type lights, about half way up, on the narrow vertical logs just to the left/right of the 3 vertical prow logs...so they'll shine up to the prow soffit (that we labored over staining/sealing for days..ha. We also plan for one above the garage door. Labor of love.) And LED sounds like the way to go cause they'll be up so high. Sure hope they last as long as they say they do :) The question I've been pondering is should we do the 'up/down', or just the 'up' lights? Im overly sensitive about not wanting to light it up too much out there..we'll have coach lights on the outsides of the middle two sliding doors on either end of the prow..matching the height of the garage door coach lights (on both sides of the garage door), at least that's the plan for now....wish I could put the sconces on a dimmer, but they're going to be on a timer, so the electrician said a dimmer wouldn't work unless we do a smart switch type thing-and we're all about not going the smart route--lol. Dumb lights, dumb switches...we embrace the dumb & thats how we roll...after my husbands flip phone finally died, not too long ago, he walked into the store and asked for the dumbest smart phone they had, lol. The poor young man who was trying to upsell him on the highest of high tech phones, didn't know what to say....See Morejacsturch
