Tree placement / front door
Comments (15)Giboosi - Never heard of Parrotia but my quick google search was interesting. Thanks for mentioning it! gary mn - point taken. KarinL - Good question. Expanding the island bed to echo the shape of the sidewalk seems to make good sense to me. I am particularly drawn to the resultant grass "pathway" that would emerge between the two spaces. I realize one could expand the bed in that fashion but refrain from adding a small tree at the yellow flag location and that is still an option I am considering. What has me most fixated on adding a small tree in the manner described is (in no particular order): 1) to better define the dog-leg shape by using three trees. 2) to enhance views of the landscape from the interior, especially during winter, due to the closer proximity of a desired specimen tree. 3) to try and soften the size/height of the front facade, especially as viewed from the street which is further exacerbated by the generally downward slope of the front yard. 4) to add some curbside intrigue by intentionally obscuring the front entranceway from some (but not all) vantage points. Still undecided, though. Thanks for posing the question and allowing my to gather my thoughts....See MoreRaise your hand if you...
Comments (31)Wow, I'm not feeling so bad now! I have disclosed from the very beginning, however, to my contractor, cabinet maker, and the place where we got our flooring that I'm super indecisive, unsure of my design/color abilities. And I reminded them of that each time I changed my mind, or doubted any decisions too! Really, it's easier for me to list what I haven't changed...Dura-ceramic flooring in "Chocolate", and the 1X1 glass/slate tile for the border in the master shower. Thats IT...those are the only 2 things in this whole build so far that I saw, fell in love with, had to have, and didn't stray from. When we picked the flooring (the 1st time) Dh was with and I couldn't decide between two carpets so I let him choose..I haven't changed that, I don't dare! The house is framed, roof is done, windows are in, plumbing rough in is done, electrical rough in is in the works. Something tells me, there will be a "few" more things in this process for me to change my mind about! From the floor planning stage, to Siding, windows (brand, size, color, grilles, placement, type), shingles (brand, style, color), kitchen layout, island shape, cabinet wood, cabinet stain color, outlets, other electrical and plumbing specifics, TV's on wall or not, fireplace or not, ceiling fans or not, laundry room window (changed that a few times)...oh gosh, I could go on and on! My DH just doesn't understand how it can be so hard for me! I'm a visual person though...I need to see it to see if I'm going to like it...I can't imagine how it's going to look. The next 6 weeks or so are going to be rough...and it's all going to be worth it!...See MoreFront Door Opens to Living Area: Furniture & Area Rug Placement
Comments (21)In case anyone who gave me any previous advice happens to see this, I just wanted to say thank you again! I haven’t posted follow up pictures (but I will)- just wanted to find the right rugs and get everything done first. I work full time so have been finishing the look in my spare time... and absolutely love it. I did end up painting the window casings back to white (but leaving the doors black) and between that and the new layout, the whole area feels so much bigger and brighter and happier. Posting on here was a very positive and productive experience, and I hope if (okay- when) I post again about some of my other rooms, you’ll jump in to give me some awesome ideas!...See MoreI have a silly questions about placement of front door on a Colonial
Comments (19)The OP's house has some small traditional features and it has a gable roof but its definitely not a Cape. A Cape always has a roof steep enough for a second story under the rafters with windows only in the gable ends. The entrance is always under the roof eave; a full cape has 2 windows each side of the door, a 3/4 cape has one on one side and two on the other, a half cape has a window each side of the door. You can drive for a mile through E. Oleans, MA and see very few houses that are not true capes. One story elements are sometimes added to the sides but rarely porches or dormers. Only a realtor would call the OP's house a cape. A Field Guide to American Houses classifies the OP's house as "Minimal Traditional" which is part of a larger category: "Modern" houses....See Morejacsturch
