How many people live here? Just scale down your dining set. Any changes to your island will just look odd.

I've tried many things and I have found that a ~45" diameter pedestal table is just about perfect for our family of four

Your table is square, but the space it is in is round with the bay windows. Switch out the table for a round one. Also the table and chairs are dark and heavy looking. Perhaps a glass top pedestal table and lighter chairs maybe with colorful fabric seats would be a nicer look. It's also a little dated to leave place mats out all the time. A colorful pretty ceramic bowl on the table will be nice instead. You are correct not to extend the island.

Doesn’t look like there room to make the current island larger. Need to access fridge and walk between them. Appears it’s just at 36” or so currently. We had a 42” round table in our last two places that worked well for 4. I wouldn’t go any smaller. Round tables really help a small space. Sketch your room out on graph paper and play with different furniture configurations to see how much clearance different pieces will allow.

I agree with others that a round table would be a nice fit for your bay window. It sounds like you are already decided on the direction you want to take with your kitchen, but if not, here are some ideas to consider. To open up the room to feel more spacious, you could remove the two cabinets on the window wall and replace with three shelves as shown below. The would be beautiful with pretty dishes you use a lot, and artwork to set them off. Since you will be getting new flooring, I would remove your current island and replace it with one that has legs that show the flooring beneath it. This will also make the room feel bigger. I would consider not painting the cabinets, but lean into the wood look with woven wood blinds that have dark brown threading to match the cabinet finish. I would repeat the dark brown in your dining chairs. They would be set off nicely against a white table. Lastly, if your corner pantry is remaining as is, I would paint the door to match the wall color. Could you share the changes you plan to make in your kitchen? That might help posters determine the style you like.

Another vote for a round table. Painted white with a pretty rug underneath it and replace the light fixture. And curtains!!

Tell us more about painting your cabinets. WHY? Is that a lazy susan I see in the table? Before I painted I would look into building window benches under the windows, add an oval table. That would be a much better use of money than painting cabinetry. Roman shades would add some color and interest.

Thank you for all the input. There are 4 of us. I originally wanted lighter cabinets when we moved in. Since we are finishing out the hardwood (the prevous owner left extra), leaving the cabinets seems too dark.

Dark cabinets with lighter wood floors can look very warm and inviting, as long as the dark is balanced with a lot of light. You might want to look into altering your existing island to add legs. Taking the dark cabinets off the window wall will balance out the dark with a light wall and open shelves instead.
