Beadboard Backing with Shaker Built-in Shelves?
Comments (14)i think beadboard a little too common/nantucket/whatever for your desire, and i agree that a custom milled back would be more in keeping with your vision. look for some proportions in the room you can re-use on the back of the unit, (maybe the floor?) and it will probably give you the effect you're seeking. and hey macv, is there another forum you could suggest? i love this one, but could use another as i do my research. my home aspires to sophistication, so far i think we come close, we've got a contemporary and unique farmhouse--excellent view forces some contemporary window walls for instance...but need to look at the details more closely. thanks--and op, sorry to hijack....See MoreWhat is your favorite depth for shelves in builtins?
Comments (7)If they are for serious book storage, a little deeper might be in order (they will look fine and not too recessed at 13" though!). I'd make mine deeper, with maybe 14" inside depth because I always have a few things that hang off the edge. You can always put a bar across the back to keep from losing smaller books. But you might not need it--it depends on what you're putting in there. You should probably secure your shelves to the wall regardless of the depth. There are kid anti-tip things as well as earthquake safety devices. (There is also the old school "coupla screws into a stud oughta do it" method.)...See MoreBuilt-in Cabinet for Glassware-paint/wallpaper back interior cabinet
Comments (9)I like very useful china/glassware. My last home had a built in buffet with glass doors on top (some might say that is dated, nonetheless went beautifully with my 1968 ranch). I put in an antiqued french mirror, wine glass racks, decanters of liquor, and barware. Also, undershelf lighting. Functional and charming. Loved it. P.S. My neighbor (who was literally 94 years old) had the most INCREDIBLE bar cabinet that she and her husband had custom built in about 1970. It was GORGEOUS. I would have bought that in a red hot minute. Floor to ceiling, about 5' wide. I think they used to have some awesome parties :)...See MorePaint color for arch and built-ins? I’m stuck!
Comments (18)When planning a whole home color palette I often use multiple colors. I generally use a neutral in the living room and hallways and might bring it into other rooms (dining room, kitchen, laundry, bath or bedrooms, but can also do those rooms with color. It depends on what else is the same or different. If you have the same flooring and trim throughout you can change wall color and still create a feeling of cohesiveness. In my last home I had different flooring, but used the neutral on the ceilings throughout the house and that created the flow from room to room. The key is to carry the colors from room to room, so if you use the blue on the walls in the dining room you want the neutral in the area rug, chair upholstery, art or décor (centerpiece, bowls on the sideboard. . . ). In the adjoining living room where the walls are neutral I want some of the blue in the décor. You may want to add a 2nd accent color in the living room and have that color in the foyer. What you don't want is one room that is totally disjointed from the other rooms that are in the same sightline. You want to walk from one room to the next and have the same colors, but in different ratios. You can also use lighter and darker shades of the same colors. Here are a couple of examples: I love this example where someone flip flopped the trim and wall color in two adjacent rooms. There are so many ways to add color, you just need to decide which colors make your heart sing and how you want to incorporate them into your home....See MoreMaureen
