Short climber for swagging in the deep south
Comments (3)In my garden Aloha is much too slow a grower to swag. Once upon a time, I wanted rose arches and swags. Then RRD came in. But I did a lot of looking at local photos from the early 1900s. Back then pillars covered opulently with roses and the occassional swag happened. I don't think you want short climbers. What you need may be climbers that can put out a flexible twenty foot cane each year: eight feet up and twelve feet out to be flipped over a chain, then it drops, and as it grows it gets flipped again. Many, many roses are not flexible enough to do that. This past weekend, in some book on the internet, there was an image of the structure supporting a swag, and the chains (the swag) had been totally wrapped with a sissal rope. And when ARE had ARE in Dahlonaga GA, their parking lot had the hardscape to make swags: theirs were telephone poles with the big heavy ropes that are used on ocean going vessels in between.(Over an inch diameter). I could see in my part of the world using Dorothy Perkins, Lady Gay and Gardenia and Turners Crimson Rambler and maybe CL Old Blush. In this part of the world, (and not on Fortuniana) Jeanne Lajoie only goes up to six feet (and isn't that flexible) and Aloha is inflexible and it's taken me eight years to get it up to ten feet, last summers drought knocked it back a couple of feet....See MoreMaking a Christmas mantle swag thingie
Comments (18)jaybird.. I remember seeing that tutorial before! I promised myself I wouldn't go buy anything more this year. We just bought a new taller tree for this house. But if I'm going to do this mantel thingie I'm going to have to go buy more stuff. Lots more. I guess I'll start with the thrift stores, $ stores and then on to the more expensive places. :) Jim, I see how buying through out the year helps spread the cost, but for some reason I just don't. I think.. I can get that later closer to Christmas....then I'm right back where I am now. :) I had wanted to do 2 huge windows in addition to my fireplace mantel but its looking less and less likely that is going to get done this year. Oh well... I'll plan better for next year! Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement. Today I'm concentrating on cleaning the house and getting ready to do those garland things....See MoreHow to Pick a DR Rug
Comments (11)I too highly recommend polypropylene. I tried sisal and our four cats liked it a little "too" much if you get my drift. I just changed out our last rug to polypropylene and will never got back to rugs with nap again. All mine are indoor outdoor rugs and are super easy to clean. With in a week of getting the large one for the Gentleman's Parlor my hubby spilled a glass of red wine all over the rug. We both jumped up, my saying get a pitcher of water while I put plastic sheeting under the rug. While I poured the water over the rug, hubby got the shop vac ready. The wine disappeared, the rug dried and no one would ever know wine was ever spilled on it. I bought them at Overstock....See MoreAre swag balances out of style
Comments (25)Swag valances are not out of style, and you could use yours for an “updated” design. As @kculbers aptly notes above, it is a classic style. For example, here is one that I found recently, and will actually be using, for myself. It comes in a bunch of colors. I think I may just use it in this color. I love it. As another example, this Amazon offering also comes in lots of great colors. Not custom, and not as nice as yours - but nice enough, and lots of folks are purchasing them. And there are actually some brilliant rooms shown in some of these customer review pics. Fun to see. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08BYR1P31/ref=ox_sc_act_image_3?smid=A3SEULT81IBW5B&th=1 Also, FWIW, there are swag valances currently being sold (24/7) on Etsy.com. A lot of great choices - and custom options, as well. These are just to give you a few examples, and also perhaps as a general point of interest. And so, yes, swag valances are truly very much alive and well - in 2021. Does everyone have to use them? No. Does everyone have to ’like’ them? No. Should “designers” know how to work with them? Yes. So the key is to find a designer who understands the style and is willing to work with it - and/or do some research on your own, in terms of looking at current rooms that have valances - see what you like, and copy some of those elements. @tozmo1 is clearly a knowledgeable and saavy designer. (Do not let the absence of the ”pro” designation fool you...) And I do agree with @tozmo1, that a green paint on walls could potentially be stunning with your valances. I think just about any of the greens could work. This is a very rough mock-up that I did on my phone, with this sort of emerald color; it’s a striking look, I think. Sage, olive, moss green... as I said, I think just about any of the greens could be a nice option for you. Not the only color option, of course; but if you like green and the general combo, it could be nice. I also like this room, with a green on the ceiling. A couple of more green color/combo views: There are any number of ways you can go for an update - doesn’t necessarily have to be green walls. Your furnishings and overall style come into play, as well. However, it could potentially be as simple as paint, Other than that, you have to decide what you really want to keep, what is negotiable, and take it from there. Not seeing your overall room, furnishings, etc., it is difficult to advise beyond this. Your valances are beautiful and you can certainly still use them. If you decide you want a change, that is fine, too. But I just want you to be able to make an informed decision, based upon accurate information. Best Wishes. ETA: Valance/window treatment info.
