Hello Marcia, Sorry to come so late to this party. I know you said that your husband likes "uniform finishes" but I'd like to suggest a tile which I installed a while back and was very pleased with the results. There is a subtle pinstripe to the tile, but you (and your husband) may find that you like the variation better than a monochrome? It's a rectified porcelain from Walker Zanger called "Groove" and it's available in 7 colors in 18"x18' field and 4"x18" bullnose trim. Here are a couple shots of the project I installed. The color was "Lava", the darkest in the series. This first shot is a close up of the shower pan mosaic I cut down from the 18" field tiles. (The tiles are skewed because I haven't racked them into line yet) This next is a view with the white wall tile for contrast. Just thought it might be worth considering? olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? If you retile the floor, it enables you to increase your Zillow listing value - under the category of last year remodel. Yes, you could leave it and allow the new homeowner to do the work themselves, but with so many wanting "move-in ready" ..... (And....Let's face it, most younger homebuyers were at soccer practice or playing video games, rather than helping with yard work or car/ home repairs. So, they know nothing about "how to" around the house,). New Tile Color-. I'd pick a light/-medium gray tone in the countertop. Black will show lots of dust, White might be hard to match to your cabinet color. Perhaps the one closest to the tub? It hard to tell the color for certain. What at color is the bathroom wall? If white, then paint trim to match gray floor.

What size of tile are you using for the floor? If it's large format, then they should just scribe the tile to the out-of-square room. If it's smaller, like 2" hex or something, then that would be more visible cut on the slight diagonal. I will say that I like their attention to detail, as they're planning the tile layout in advance, rather than trying to rectify things mid-tiling. It's likely that with carpet butting up to the tile will mask the gap, and no one will notice. The 50 mm step up does give me pause, though. That's a 2" step up, quite a toe-stubber. How are you planning to ease that transition?
