What is the depth of the couch? The length, width and height of the side tables? Ditto for the arm chair, the size and shape of the ottoman, the height and width of the entertainment center. Is there a desk chair? What is the width of the desk? Does it have an opening in the middle or on the right or left side? Is the back of the desk finished? Right now, making guesses, I can't fit everything into the space unless you don't want to get into the dining room, kitchen or hallway :-( It's not the lack of wall space; it's the lack of space for all your furniture.

Here're some grabbed quick off a fine designers' website that aren't templates for this room but do illustrate the idea of loosening up furniture placement for living and inviting people in. There's no rule about facing a sofa to a fireplace or not, placing something diagonally or not, just as there's no rule that furniture must be placed at rigid right angles and not allowed to be angled or moved over for better conversation. These designers charge a lot to mess furniture placement up like this. David Easton's, second below, could look as if it were going to be formal right-angle but some of the chairs aren't placed yet--but it doesn't. This designer knows how to arrange furniture for comfort AND elegance, without static rigidity. Note that none of these arrangements present their backs or a cold shoulder to guests in the doorway. They draw people in. Not all pictures clearly illustrate that, but the designers' stature guarantee it is the case. Also note all these arrangements include a lightweight chair or two, or more, that could be moved closer in or over for a really good coze.

Where do you sit when watching TV? How many people are here to watch TV? Relax? Are the blinds ever opened? How often do you enter via the front door? Do you have friends over often - entering the front door?

Your view is fantastic! I like the idea of mounting the t.v. in the bookcase. Perhaps you can add a smaller bookcase to the den and bring some of your books in there if you're going to make it a reading room. I agree with bringing the green chair up to the conversation area at a right angle to the sofa. Perhaps then you could find a smaller cabinet to put under the opening to hold your record player and components. I also like the idea of grouping your plants in front of the small window between the two bookcases. It looks as though you would have room for a longer sofa in the den if you keep the coffee table but add slender floor lamps on either side for reading. If you would like to keep the dining table where it is, consider swagging a light fixture over to it to define the space. I think this space has the potential to have a cozy, eclectic, lived in bungalow feel with just a few small changes!
