Interesting video on rise of neutral interiors

This showed up in my YouTube feed. She talks about the rise of neutral interiors in a historical and sociological context.

The whole thing was about 1/2 hour long. I thought the first two thirds were the most interesting. The last third is devoted to shredding some of the design trends of the past decade, and her targets won't be a surprise to anyone who frequents these boards (e.g. painting everything gray, open shelving in kitchens, and barn doors).

I keep trying to play it, but it won’t work … I think it’s my iPad, though, not the video. I’ll keep trying!

I get frustrated posting colors, the mixing of patterns, and/or more traditional suggestions on the decor boards (pillows, rugs, curtains, etc) to OPs asking for such … I’m always outnumbered by posters/pros trying to convince the OP to go lighter, more neutral, generic, modern. Again, even when they clearly don’t want that.

There’s definitely a formula, and we could get bingo daily. Gray and white or black and white, bring in color (lol) with camel leather or solid navy. Only one (subtle) pattern per room and if more, only two, and you must measure the scale of patterns. MCM lights. Clean lines. Romabio the color out of all brick and stone. Everything matchy-matchy. Fig tree. Generic pillows. Generic lamps. Generic art. Generic accent chairs. Generic abstract rug.

Nothing inherently wrong with any of the above, it’s just baffling to me that, on a site as well-populated and diverse as Houzz, the same advice is given on nearly every thread, no matter what.

(I love neutrals, so not dissing them at all. My own bedroom is very monochromatic and neutral, and I like mixing modern in with my other decor.)

She lost some credibility with "Van Go-eth?" And Lay Corbusier?

I think the bit about the psychological impact of grey is silly. The example they give of a "grey day" in London makes no sense. The colors one would see outside on a grey day are not grey per se.

She makes a good point at the end, that these trends don't really reflect most people's homes.

girl wonder, some books I've found useful and enjoyed: Interior Design Master Class: 100 Lessons from America's Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration by Carl Dellatore: "Creating a library-worthy resource on design, the volume’s editor, Carl Dellatore, recruited one hundred top American interior designers to contribute essays on a particular aspect of design, interspersed with examples of their work. Useful for both aficionados and professionals, the volume reveals the meticulous and often heady process that goes into creating great interiors." There's a very good good write-up and interview with the author at the design blog Quintessence. Habitat: The Field Guide to Decorating by decorator Lauren Liess (who is basically self-taught, which is why she calls herself a decorator rather than an interior designer), who has a great blog (not updated much anymore) where she has explained her choices and decisions. No plans to sell anytime soon. And I am doing updates as vacancies and budgets allow. My first tenant stayed 7 years. Last time I sold a rental it was code to have fluorescents in the kitchen and bath. When I remodeled my kitchen the code was not updated to LED but that has prob. changed now. (Although I do miss the fluorescent box in my kitchen I can see much better with fluorescent and incandescent lighting than I can with LED.) I already know how costly it is to ask my electrician to stick two extra cans in the kitchen because I already asked for two extra cans over the bar area and it was over budget. Priority with the budget is to have a really good paint job. The acoustical ceiling has a lot of discoloration. Next time, the ceiling won't have to be painted I have more to spend on other things. The cost difference is significant between with / without ceiling painting. The painter is asking the the electrical be done before they paint so I can take a look at it. As long as there is a junction box to accept a new fixture I can handle it. But if it is a situation where there is just Romex sticking through the ceiling and the fixture is just screwed to the beams, I won't be able to. There is no acoustical texture in the kitchen. My priority was replacing the track lighting in the living room because it is very dark and it is where you enter the condo. The kitchen is tiny. Painting it a lighter color will help a lot.. But I agree with you, MY WISH LIST: get rid of the acoustical texture, remove the fan that has been recessed into the ceiling in the dining room patch the ceiling and move the junction box back to the level of the ceiling and get a decent dining fixture, install canned lighting over the bar, and kitchen light update. Also getting an HOA compliant metal gate outside at the entrance on to the front deck from the stairs and a security door.

My favorite color expert is Mother Nature. If your husband looks good in greens the browns should play well with his wardrobe and the combination should send the right message based on your assessment of his work. Make sure to get the appropriate lighting for his face. My office has great over head lighting over my desk (300 watts of 5000 k lighting). Does wonders for my concentration and innovation - similar to think tank lighting, but is awful for video conferencing - throws downward shadows and is way to harsh - washes me out (fair skin and dark hair). I resemble some sort of ghoulish Disney witch. I work with data quality control and data analytics and am usually just sharing numbers and data visualizations during meetings, but there is a push at work for people to use video conferencing. The company just sent me an independent camera after I explained that I keep my laptop closed and under my floating desktop and just have multiple monitors on my desk. I guess I will need to address the lighting. Thinking I may also have to update my wardrobe . . . the executives may not be impressed with my large collection of pajamas.

Regarding Turface fines, do I understand correctly that they would be helpful for in-ground trees in flat or otherwise insufficiently drained areas? I do have some trees like that and would love to put the Turface fines to good use. It depends on what the soil is like and whether or not they are used in a raised bed. If you have an area with heavy clay and you incorporate them into the soil, they might actually increase the amount of water that collects in the soil surrounding your plants' roots. This is known as the "bathtub effect". Amending a garden where the soil is clay just causes the garden area to hold more water unless the garden is on a slope or there are tiles or a ditch to direct water away from the area. THEN, it can be very helpful. Whenever there is an area where percolation of water through the soil is slow, amending it in the hope of creating more air space results in an additional measure of water filling the newly created pores until the water naturally percolates through the soil. In the case where they are used in a raised bed (RB), water will move horizontally away from the RB across the top of the clay soil, where it will evaporate much faster than water below the surface of soils not exposed to air movement. When water evaporates from the surface of the surrounding soil, it 'pulls' additional water from RBs via capillary action. That's why clay soils below RBs should not be amended with organic material or sand as it creates thew bathtub effect and holds more water in the amended areas unless there is a plan in place to direct subsurface water away from the area. I couldn’t seem to locate uncomposted pine or fir bark fines ........ Will exceeding 3/8” on the bark fines be a big problem for the gritty mix? April through Memorial Day is the easiest time of year to find good bark products for making media. I suggest that you should until you find the right ingredients to make either the 5:1:1 mix or the gritty mix; this, because if you 'try to make something work', there is a good chance you'll end up unimpressed and give up. If you get it right the first time, it will be a game changer. Too, once you find a supplier, keep looking for other suppliers. I've found I can always find it somewhere near me, but operations go out of business or might decide to stop carrying a product some of us find very useful. What I'm saying is, it's better to have more than one basket to put your eggs in. I'm on my last bag of fir bark screened 1/8-1/4, so I'll be needing to screen bark again come next spring. Also, do you prefer/recommend gypsum or Foliage Pro 9-3-6 more for trees in pots? Your fertilizer will dictate what liming agent is appropriate. I always lime the 5:1:1 mix with dolomitic (garden lime) to bring the pH up to a more acceptable level. If I'm using the gritty mix + Foliage-Pro 9-3-6, there is no need to use a liming agent. If I'm using the gritty mix and a fertilizer without calcium or magnesium, I'll use gypsum (CaSO4) as a calcium source and Epsom salts (MgSO4) as a source of magnesium as neither compound has an appreciable effect on pH. Note: I haven't had to supplement Ca/Mg for a long time - since I started using Foliage-Pro 9-3-6. I happen to like the Greige Agenda, and so I will not watch the video. I have an aversion to beige, brown, and excessive use of white however. Gray is one of my favorite four colors, along with turquoise, purple, and black.

She doesn't bash neutrals, she's just diving into WHY neutrals are dominant, why neutrals are considered classy and colors are considered gauche (currently, and that was a very broad-brush paraphrase on my part).

She isn't kind toward the way neutrals (currently gray) are being implemented in builder basic homes and cheap apartment remodels. But a lot of that was about cheaping out on materials and design choices and not about color.

Go-eth? I mean, I’m not a stickler for following authentic language pronunciations of names, but ”Go-eth”? as in pride before a fall? unto Egypt? Whither thou, I will go also? I AM a stickler for informed quotations. It kind of made me question her expertise and authority in dicsussing this matter.

Brick versus concrete. I hadn’t thought of that. My great-grandfather came her as a mason, stqrted a construction company, and by the third generation they were still general contractors but with an expertise in concrete work. Did GGF do himself out of a trade?

Marbles. When I visited the Met for the first time a few years ago, my guide docent did show us some ancient painted marbles, only traces of pigment remaining. It’s pretty cool to imagine what they might have looked like way back when.

Neutrals.The other day I pulled out of a parking lot, at that magical hour when it is dusk, lights are on inside, but people haven’t drawn the shades yet. The house across street had two windows facing out, and each window had a lamp with a red shade. Enchanting. As I drove theough the neighborhood, I snooped I mean couldn’t help but notice interiors. Some walls in neutrals, and some in color, so inviting to my eye. (And, I saw a good share of tvs over fireplaces: oh, boy, they sure are visible to everyobdy and their neighbor. )

i think there is always a place for neutrals, but with color layered with it.

Here I sit with BM’s Quiet Moments, Hepplewhite Ivory, Manchester Tan, and a couple of blues and pinks and a yellow. I love color on the walls. And I wondered, especially after seeing those two charming red lamps, if what a room looks like from outside is ever one of thoughts for interior design?
