Best way to fix paint mistakes?
Comments (34)LOL!! Moonshadow, you are too funny! In case my idea of a photoshopping career doesn't appeal to you, you should really consider some kind of creative writing! One thing's for sure -- you are not lacking for creative talent. I think we need to get Moon to come to Atlanta too. I need in-person moral support and she and I can cheer for the PnD team together. After the victory over the GWP, the PnD team can enjoy homemade Savannah crabcakes for lunch and pecan pie and peach 'n berry cobbler for dessert. Of course, served with sweet tea, and shared on our back porch with the scent of honeysuckle and jasmine from the gardens rather than paint fumes in the house. :) Funcolors, thanks for your moral support too! You're welcome to join the PnD team in Atlanta also. :) In all seriousness, you are so right that I had the knowledge of everyone here behind me. With everyone's input, I felt like I knew what I was talking about, and the contractor really wasn't left with any valid argument. I am VERY appreciative of everyone's advice. I also appreciate the humor -- it's helped to keep me sane through this. We met with our usual painter this morning. He's happy to take on the job and finish it properly for us, and I know he will. He actually spotted a few more problems that I hadn't noticed. He's proposing to prime the previously wallpapered wall and do two coats of paint. On the spots primed on the other three walls, he'll sand and/or feather the primer better than they have (they left distinct edges, which he said will result in texture problems), then he'll roll just those sections and feather that. Then he'll cover all three of those walls with another coat of blue. He said he thinks that will cover everything evenly, since the primed spots will still end up with two coats, but if it's not good, he'll do another coat. The trim is in such bad shape in so many places, including spots that weren't painted at all, he said it'll be easier to just repaint the trim than try to do spot fixes. And he found an area of the ceiling that wasn't painted and some areas that have scuff marks, so he's going to repaint the ceiling. He's also going to paint the vanity in the bathroom and give all the walls one more coat of blue. He thinks they may have just done one coat so far or he suggested that they may have watered down the paint. He's going to send me his estimate on Sunday. We told the contractor today that we're going with someone else, and once we get the quote, if it comes in lower, we'll pay him the difference. He said ok. I can't tell you what a relief it is to have that conversation behind us and to know that everything will be finished nicely from here on out. Thank you again to all of you who posted and helped me with this. I'm so glad I found this board!...See MoreHow do I fix my mistake?!
Comments (14)I get it, you wanted a more crisp bright feel. One option is to make KD take the cabinets back and replace them with what you really wanted, and proceed with your original plan. Otherwise, it is fixable. The colors are relative to each other. There is no pure white. The cabinets only look dingy to your eye because they are next to the white trim, which is a white whiter than they are (and next to the stark awful drywall compound, as Val said). If you put an even creamier white next to the cabinets, THEY might very well look very white and crisp in comparison. So, assuming that you did make a mistake and the trim is too bright and is making them look dirty (which may be the case), you will need to re-paint the trim, and select a different blue for the wall. I do think the blue is too pastel now for the cabinets, it needs to be brought down some. How does the granite and backsplash go? Don't you worry, it is going to look beautiful. When we were having ours re-done and custom painted, I spent a whole afternoon crying because the color they promised was not the color that went on. But when it was over, it was just beautiful, and it all ended up very well. That will happen with your kitchen too, fear not....See MoreContractor refused to fix his mistakes unless we pay
Comments (10)Thank you for responding. How elderly? My dad is in his 80's. This contractor knows that my parents are not likely to go to court (at their age). I have done my best to step in to try to get the contractor to fix his mistakes at no additional cost to my parents, but he reminded me that the contract is with my parents, not me. I do need to get on that contract. About the kitchen cabinets, my father wrote to him that there is to be no space above the cabinets. The contractor never discussed anything with us, and suddenly one day those 36-inch cabs arrived and were put up without our knowledge. I then told him about the problem, and he agreed to order taller cabinets. I thought the cabs were being made, but I found out that he never ordered them. The addition was supposed to be finished at that point, so we felt stuck with what was installed. I'm sure he would have charged us for a new set of upper cabs and labor. He made a mistake for the fridge space, and he refused to fix it unless my parents paid. This was holding up installing the appliances and other work in the kitchen. My father felt like he had to pay to get the work going again to completion. I told the contractor that he cannot charge for his mistakes, and his response was: "if you want the changes, you have to pay." This week, a subcontractor was there to do work, and the contractor was not there to supervise. If it were up to me, I would have fired his sorry butt a long time ago. The addition is almost finished now (over 8 months over). This post was edited by grass-cat on Fri, Jan 9, 15 at 10:17...See MoreBig Impulse Mistake— Will This Fix It?
Comments (62)I pinkmountain: Yes, please take those before and after pics! I find I learn so much from my photos anyway... though often things looks better IRL than in the photos. I love Japanese prints. I considered getting some woodblock prints from the 1800s... they were very small and I didn’t have a little nook for them, so I didn’t get— but still regret. quirkycabin: Your home sounds gorgeous. I would sit on your rug all day! What a cherished item to have in your home... beautiful memories. I am not offended at all by your comment about worn spots. I adore worn spots on old rugs. To me they give the item life and a story! Sad to say but I don’t know the stories mine has to tell since it was not passed down like yours. My family didn’t have those kinds of things to pass down. As for the light in the room, it can get cold because it is north facing. The trim is dark... I’m not a fan of the contrast esp since the crown molding and trim around the windows and doors is too thin. I’ve been tempted to at least paint the crown molding so that it blends in with the ceiling and doesn’t call attention to itself. Please share photos of your home if you are able. FinallyHome: Thank you for the encouragement and photo. I love studying the mixture of textures and patterns. It helps so much to see the finished product!...See MoreMrs. S
