Our 4840 spider arm broke today. She's lived a good useful life

Locally, dealer does have the previous gen Little Giant at around 2K as a Wild Guess.

Floor display so it may have some nicks here and there....

Off to google the different W1 variants as the current laundry machines on the market are not really on my WiKi.

I would prefer a 27" for King Covers....so while I have one browser window on Miele, I'll cross shop the LG's and the like...

Off to take a Deep Dive on recent GW Laundy Threads.

And no, I won't cross shop and look at the Octoplus series

Impulse Buy. Orderd the WXI860WCS. I'll figure out the king situation.....cross that bridge come springtime.

Only thing I need to read is can I still use our own detergent if we don't TwinDos. It's been a looong time since I've looked at these auto dispensing , etc.

The WXIR - didn't bother to even look at features as I wanted something with a *button*. It's like cars these days. Bought one this year as I did not want the -updated model- with dual touchsceens cluster and zero buttons

You won't be disappointed. We have the wxi-860 you bought and the wwh-860 previous model. Have almost 4000 hours on the WXI-860 now and no issues.

You can use the pull out drawer or Twin-Dos. Once the free MIele twindos bottles are empty save them and buy a small funnel from the hardware store. Stick it in the spout with the pluger on the empty twindos bottle and refill with Tide, Persil or what you want. I get 6-10 fills per bottle before the air relief valve gets clogged. I then just just thow miele a few dollars for a full one and then repeat. Saves a good chunk of money and I get to use the detergent I like the most. We use Tide PurClean almost exclusively.

The W1 is a little smaller, but I don't think you will be disappointed.

Thought I'd bump this thread back up to see how everyone's wintersowing turned out. On the wintersowing forum, they use May 1st as the cut-off. Doesn't mean you can't still sow in recyclable containers after that date, but it is considered spring/summer sowing at that point. Anyway, by May 1st I had sown 129 containers of herb, veggies, and flowers. As of yesterday, all but 19 had germinated, which comes out to somewhere around an 85% germination rate. Not bad IMO! Some of those will probably still germinate, but are waiting for warmer temps. The past couple of weeks, I have been gradually transplanting annuals to the pots they will grow in for the rest of the summer. I've had to bring them into the garage a few nights when it got below freezing, but since they are on a covered porch, and can be pushed up against the house for wind protection, they have done fine. Haven't lost any yet. Yesterday, I started planting out wintersown perennials, and covering them with the top half of a milkjug to give it them a little shade and wind protection. Things like Berlandiera lyrata, Asclepias tuberosa, Feverfew (hope I don't regret growing this one!), Anthemis tinctoria, and Dianthus. Most of what is left to plant out are annual herbs, which will go in pots on the porch. Well, there's also the tomatoes, but those will be planted out last, along with the peppers that were grown inside. To give you some idea how far behind this year is from the previous ones I've wintersown, my germination records show that I normally start planting out the perennials the first week of April. This year, I didn't even plant the lettuce out until April 24. Anyone else planting out their wintersown sprouts yet? Bonnie

Linelle - I don't eat fish (I have, but I prefer not to). I don't like to even wade in waters where they swim for fear of touching them. I have, at times, been so startled by an unexpected photo of a fish when turning the page in a magazine that I have actually thrown the magazine across the room - just an automatic response. I can't pinpoint the exact moment when this fear came on, but I was pretty small. I do remember being in a pet store when I was maybe four or five years old, and running my hand along a table full of sale items. My hand stopped on something that felt odd, and when I looked to see what it was, it was a dried-out, dead fish. Horrifying! I believe I started having fish dreams not too long after that. I'd wake up screaming in the night, certain that a fish was in the bed with me. My poor mom, being awakened at dark-thirty and having to quell the unreasonable fears of a very insistent little girl! When I was a tween, I used to like to go fishing with my grandfather when I visited my grandparents' lake house in the summer. He would bait the hook for me and take any fish I caught off the hook, and I thought it was great fun. I guess I wasn't horribly phobic at that time. One day he and I went fishing out in his boat. I caught 17 fish, and we took them home with us. My grandmother deemed them too small to fix for our dinner, so she decided to make a sort of stew out of them for the dog. She put them in a pressure cooker (I have no idea why), thinking they were all dead. Something happened and once the thing heated up, we heard hideous thrashing inside the pot. After awhile it stopped, but when she lifted the lid, there was a nasty film on top and a few eyeballs floating around. Again - horrifying stuff. The dog ate it up though. Once I told a boy in high school about my phobia, and shortly thereafter I opened my locker to find a huge dead fish inside. The boy thought that was just the funniest practical joke ever, and chased me up and down the halls holding it by the tail. I remember trying desperately to keep my cool and not show how agitated I was, but I fought not to burst into tears - or pass out. (I know this is getting to be way too long ...) A few years ago I decided that I wanted to overcome my phobia once and for all and actually sought counseling for it. I also tried to do a bit of immersion work on my own, and DH and I went to a local aquarium one afternoon. It's long been difficult for me to even get close to a fish, in any manner - even those behind glass. The salt water aquariums didn't bother me terribly; after all, those fish are often beautifully colored or comical looking. The freshwater tanks, however, caused me to panic. I forced myself to remain seated next to one that was built low to the ground with glass walls, with the various lake-living fish swimming right up to me on all sides and behind me. I couldn't do it. I sat there and just bawled and hyperventilated, and DH got me the hell out of there. Around that time we were traveling regularly to Mexico, and scuba diving was very popular where we stayed. In spite of my fish phobia, it sounded like a lot of fun, and I went so far as to take a few scuba lessons here, but did not go on to be certified. I didn't like the feeling of breathing underwater and couldn't get past a feeling of simmering panic. I know I wouldn't have made certification anyway - at least not with the instructor I had - as his group went to a local man-made lake to receive their certification, and the waters were often murky and always filled with curious fish. Pretty sure that seeing something like this would have induced dangerous panic in me! Gosh, I am sorry to have told you more than you ever wanted to know. I've not been asked about this in a long time, and I guess my memories just came flooding back!

Hi Rogelio, Actually, this is not the latest part of this message series -- the current thread is Part 43. However, no harm done, and I will respond to you here. But you might want to move over to Part 43 to continue our exchange. " No, there are three things wrong with that. First of all, the two numbers need to add up to 24, not 20. Second of all, the hours of light need to be greater than the hours of dark. (I use 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or sometimes 17 hours of light and 7 hours of dark.) And third, you don't need to "induce flowering" with zinnias. They will automatically form a bud after 5 or 6 leaf pairs. Not only do you not need to induce flowering, I don't know of any legitimate way you could keep them from flowering. " Also when breeding if I find a specimen I want to collect or chuck the pollen would I just clip the head off and dust the flower I want to seed to see what happens? " I don't understand that question. Perhaps you could restate it. But let's move over to Part 43 to continue this. That is a nice bunch of zinnias in your photo, and they look well grown. ZM

A1an- Although I have Miele vacuums, I must admit I don’t know too much about them or how they differ from Miele vacuums sold in other countries. I was really referring to Miele washing machines sold in this country. I have often wondered, as you seem to be suggesting, how many of the changes Miele made to their U.S. washers are a direct result of changing power requirements across countries. The Miele 220v washers I have purchased ( 1100 series and Little Giant) seem more robust and have more sensible programming than the 4840 and W1 washers I own, both of which run on 110V. The latest W1 has been a disappointment from the perspective of programming that was probably unintentionally crippled when they modified the machine for the US. One can’t select more than one option in a cycle (e. g. Can’t add both a prewash and an extra rinse). Since the manual says you can, I think it is a software bug that Miele USA either can’t or won’t fix. But I suspect there are other intentional alterations that Miele made to their US appliances based upon some belief that consumers here are not educated enough to handle tough laundry decision making (whatever that is). Why doesn't Miele support empty Twindos containers that consumers can fill with the laundry products of our own choosing? Miele sells such containers in Europe and the W1 can be told what is in the container. Not so in the United States. The Mieles are still good products, but IMO they have struck out when they tried to make a machine they thought would appeal to US consumers (the 4840). I wonder about the 3038 too. The OP says his lasted 3 years before a life ending failure. It’s another 110v machine. And when Miele USA has no process by which to address software glitches that impair the functioning of their machines (the W1), that also seems problematic and not consistent with their “Immer besser” motto and supposed philosophy.

Not even sure how common this is a thing. Miele does the extended warrantys with install and if I recall, Canadian's get the longer warranty. Turned out for the month of January, if ordered this month and delivered by Feb X date, they are throwing:extending the warraty to Miele Extended of 5 years, which is a nice freebie plus

With the said, I am planning to take a drive out today so the wifey can see the W1 and the LG....just to visually see the tub side before I take a deep dive on settings. Miele has always been great with out most delicate handwash stuff. Not sure if LG will fare, but on my brief Wiki's on friends who have LG, they like it and it's fairly reliable

They had a W1 stacked directly side by side the the LG I would have bought

We asked out rep to hold the W1 but I think the LG is going to trump this

5 Under the Roof - load size wins.

I know the miele is better overall, build , wash, etc...

But the volume is the dealbreaker

We just ordered a WXI860 over the WXR860 for the same reasons!

Thanks luna123456 for the TwinDos tips! Machines are due next month.

Did I read somewhere I change temps and spin speeds from words to numbers? We have a W1986 too.

The W1 models are very nice and wash better than any consumer-grade machine. I have the WXR860/TXR860 and love the touchscreen and the ability to save favorites. I also refill my TwinDos cartridges like luna. If you like loud fragrances, the Miele TwinDos detergent is superb.

I also changed my display to show the actual temp and RPM spin speed. Much better than the default "warm plus" or "maximum" descriptions.

Thanks Little! We're an unscented household and ordered in advance Miele;s Sensitive TwinDos 1 and 2.

Is changing the display in the manual? It's the first thing we want to do!

We're unscented too and also advanced ordered the sensitive detergent; it's also superb. Depending on your water quality, you can likely dial down the dosage of the both UltraPhase 1 and 2. I had mine set to 23 ml for UltraPhase 1 and 17 ml for UltraPhase 2. The washer comes with a set of detergent cartridges so you'll have to figure out what you're going to want to do with the UltraPhase 1 that comes inside the washer. You can use the UltraPhase 2 as it's unscented.

There are instructions in the manual for EVERYTHING that machine does! I downloaded a PDF of mine and refer to it frequently. There are so many settings you can change. I like my laundry well rinsed so I turned on the allergy setting which automatically adds a third rinse to most cycles. I also turned on the maximum rinse level so the rinses are a third of the way up the door.

Our water is very hard at about 15 gpg. Not sure yet what that translates to detergent dosage for the washer. We successfully adjusted our latest Miele dishwasher for perfect result with AutoDos and salt.

I will start to study the .pdf manual in anticipation! These machines will be our 8th and 9th Miele's.
