Above Garage Door Dilemma

Hi Community,

Looking for some suggestions to replace the designs shown above my garage doors.

Acreage was purchased recently, and it is now time to start thinking about getting away from those images. Looking for a Western-Country look. Pictures depicting current style provided.

Home will be painted this summer a dark brown on stucco, and doors replaced with Clopay doors to match the cedar on our gate (see pic).

Grateful for suggestions (and images, if possible) on what to do above those 3 garage doors. This side of the home gets the morning sun, and we live in the Foothills of Alberta (near Calgary), so winter is a thing to consider as well.

Trim with wide cedar planks to make a lintel beam across the top to hide arches and post on the sides. maybe some cedar brackets would hide how the arches cut the corners of the door frames.

Gorgeous sunset!!! I would remove what is there and not put anything back. Hopefully gargage doors will have windows for some interest

We have a house in the family we are considering that has the same weird front door on the side arrangement and garage door in front (city lot, no other place for a garage) and our plan if we redo the house is a garage door that blends with the house and then spruce up the front and the walkway to the front as much as possible. (We are wondering even about putting some kind of porch over the front door so that there is some front-facing structure that can say ‘hello, front door here!’ but we haven’t quite decided what form that would take yet.) Otherwise people see the garage door and get confused about a lack of front door.

Boy that is the wrong place for a garage light. Right location for a security light, but you have to decide what you need. The higher up the wall, the wider the spread on the light needs to be. I would call out an electrician and have electrical boxes placed either over the garage door or on either side of the door. Cap the box you currently have. You can replace the electrical supply box with a window so the gable wall doesn't appear to be so very large in size.

The issue is the overall width here. It’s too wide to work well with that type of hardware. I highly recommend either the Hafele coplanar sliding door hardware, where you open half at a time, or their lift and stay hardware, and split the opening horizontally. I don’t recommend bifold doors at all . They are always in the way. Pocket doors are good, but they mostly stay open in most people’s kitchens. @jck910 - its actually a sunrise. What is on there is painted on board, so easily removed. Thanks for your suggestion.

@shirlpp - I think I can paint it (those symbols are just painted on board). To paint over that is easy. You just gave me a great idea: replace the board by hardieboard (same colour as the cedar timbers on the gate) and add the same solar barn lights we have over the gate. thanks for the suggestion.

If you are going to paint the stucco, why not square off the garage opening. I know it is an extra expense, but trying to cover then with cedar might look off over time.

IMO we need to see the house and if western / country is the aim those arches have to go but those addons are all western country . Maybe use them somehwere else fo fun.

@kathleen MK - I thought about that too. I’ve seen some pics on here, and like it, but not sure about the ceiling above garage, if it would allow me to do that. going to think about your suggestion and make some drawings to see how it would look.

@houssaon - that’s an option we’re considering too. There’s too many arches on this home (hacienda style), and not our style. Arches on our porch/balcony are coming down in the spring and replaced by cedar post porch/balcony instead (to match the gate). That was an easier design-decision. Trimming the arches, and then leveling the top to match the top of the garage doors will require a bit of design flex on my end. Great suggestion. thank yiu

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - those addons are painted there, and we do not care for them at all. I see that a lot of comments are to trim the arches, which is a great idea. Just have to see if it’s doable (need to see what’s behind the painted board, and if there’s a supporting beam behind it). Great idea. Thanks
