Tool for Pulling Up Small Trees

Can someone recommend a tree pulling tool. I am fighting a battle with Elaeagnus and J. Priviet. I had cleared the fence row 5 yrs ago and they are back along with wisteria. Need to pull up roots and all.

I bought a tool called an extractigator. It works pretty well, as long as soil is moist. When my clay soil is dry it just breaks them off. But when the ground is moist it’s much better than a shovel. I would buy it again, if you have an issue tree saplings.

in my sand.. i also found in spring.. i could just pull out things .. but by late june or july.. the soil was so hard.. nothing short of digging stuff out worked..

you dont mention your soil type .. nor how big these plants are.. you really arent trying to pull out 4 or 5 year stock.. are you??

i just cut everything flush to teh ground and applied a stump killer immediately.. and im not aware anything ever grew back ..

any time you disturb the soil.. you can activate seeds stored in said soil.. so the beauty of cutting flush.. etc... is no soil disturbance..

i can show you my handy dandy applicator.. if you havent seen it before.. lol ..

i used non diluted round up.. as it is labeled as a stump killer inthis concentration.. or it used to be anyway ...

once you remove all you need to properly apply and maintain mulch to severely retard seed germination. .. and to keep the soil friable so you can pull out new sprouts EVERY SEASON ... you cant do this every 5 years or so...

Hi All, Thanks for the ... um ... spirited debate so far. I've been far too busy to respond to each of your messages. I'm very much a part-part-part-time gardener. I've learned a lot from your posts, however. I understand that there are no definitive answers, and every point of view has pros & cons. Part of my problem is that I'm not 100% sure on what I want and when I think I know what I want, I don't have the time or the money to get it done that way. Upon one of your advice, I had a local landscaper deliver a big load of mulch (for free), and started spreading that around a part of the yard. That seems like a good way to keep weeds down w/o using chemicals. I'm not particularly afraid of the chemicals' toxicity -- but all else being equal I'd prefer that fewer chemicals be manufactured and used. I also bought a Hound Dog Cultivator to give it a try, and as someone noted above, it doesn't work all that well on rocky soils like mine. If I could afford it, I'd probably buy a used tiller. But I can't. Nor do I have the space to store it. My 1-car garage is jam-packed. So, my plan right now is to spread mulch to keep weeds down, and once I figure out what to do w/ a particular part of the yard, clear the mulch and plant stuff there. Thanks all, and if you're in/near San Diego, come right over and help me garden! There's a cold six pack and some hot dogs in it for ya.

If I were to cut that tree down I'd use a sawzall type saber saw with a quality 12 inch pruning blade. It's almost as efficient as an electric chain saw but easier to control. Less likely to grab or throw something harsh because it reciprocates rather than spins. I'd then cut it flush with the ground using the saber saw. Just lay the saw on its side and slice along the dirt. Removing the dirt somewhat beforehand with a hose with a jet type sweeper nozzle would maybe help to get the wood more exposed to help avoid trying to slice through flint rocks. At the most, I'd destroy a ten dollar blade; nothing more would be needed in equipment or disposables. Then I'd cover it with manure or fertilizer (nitrogen sources) and a low mound of soil, and the little stump would be gone in a year or two, depending on how moist it was kept. Some people say this doesn't work, but it does for me. Reliably. BTW: Harbor Fright has a 6 amp recip saw on sale right now (Item #65570) for $29, and that's a nearly throwaway price.

Not bad, I would go up another foot to clean it up, make the cuts straighter but not bad. I bought a Mexican Fan to replace my Sabal Mexicana. Seems these are impossible to transplant. I have about another year or two before I will have trunk on my Fan.. All your marks will grey up in a few weeks mabye a month.. Good going.. also got two big new sagos. One of the pups on one the old ones I have popped out of the ground with just one frond, kinda bizzare wish all the fronds would come out but just got the one.. Did you ever pick up those free sagos that guy had advertised? My parents brought me these from somewhere.. they had asian scale on these to but not to bad.

Classic size. I wasn’t sure I could handle the larger one. I get lots of walnut and hickory saplings which are impossible for me to pull unless I catch them when they are tiny, so this tool has been a huge help to getting things out of my flower beds.

I ordered the classic as my 47th Anniverery and Valentines gift from my husband. The suggested gift for 47 is garden or plants although every anniversary gift is outdoor related at our house.

The only time he has balked at the proposed gift I thought I would get was the chain saw I wanted many years ago when I was a 100 lb weakling. He had/has a normal sized one but I couldn't handle the weight of it so I thought a smaller one just for me would be a wonderful idea.... He disagreed and gave me a pole saw.

We have had health issues so I have just been able to maintain for the last few years. Spinal surgeries, rotator cuff x 2 because of a fall that messed up the first surgery, covid ongoing issues, sciatica etc. Getting old is the pits. I did the straight round up on the stumps but ugly agnus just won't die. The past privet jungle area just has so many seeds that keep sprouting so it is a constant issue. I did get a load of tree chippings from the electric people that I am planning to use in that area. The soil is red clay so I must do my pulling during the winter after rains soak the ground. I can't wait for it to get here!
