Comments (40)Merry, if your wallpaper is properly applied you really SHOULD NOT see any seams. I'd defy you to find any in my house--I'm pretty fussy about that, and know the tricks to getting paper and borders to match correctly. whoever said they have swirly plaster and can't use wall paper? My new house had textured plaster applied to the walls. It's GORGEOUS with wall paper over it--has so much depth and character than wall applied over flat plaster (and believe me, I've done both in 37 years of marriage! As to removing wall paper? only time I've ever had a problem with removal was in the living room of our first house--but there were TWELVE layers of wallpaper, one on top of the other, many painted over. it was literally as thick as sheet rock, and there was no way to get moisture down to the lowest leve in one shot. Otherwise, I find it's not that difficult to remove--and I will not ever paint or paper over old paper. As a matter of fact, my bathroom? When I decide to change the wallpaper, which I do every year or two, it's only a morning's work to remove the old, clean the walls and put up the new. I really think many have been scared off wallpaper--it's really easy to deal with. As to trends? Totally agree with whoever said that Stainless, granite and 'no' wallpaper will be out in 5 years. Of course, you'll still be able to buy stainless and granite, but they 'experts' will have everyone convinced that they're old-fashioned. That's how they keep selling us more and more expensive stuff. If they can get only a few people to run out and needlessly replace stuff in their homes, it's extremely profitable for them. And, of course, there's the issue that this sort of proclamation makes people doubt their own ability to make good choices--oops--more work for the professional advisors (decorators, personal shoppers, etc)....See MoreNeed pics of painted color beadboard wallpaper in breakfast area
Comments (23)The angle of that last photo definitely shows the true size of the room....thanks for posting it! I like the blinds since they give a lighter, brighter feel. But hey, that's just my opinion. : ) And.........I have to agree with Caminnc's comment about the cushions re: color vs pattern. You have a lot going on with remodeling, so waiting on the window treatment may be wise at this point. Hanging some simple panels on each side of the window, along with the blinds, would change the whole feel of the room, but I understand you wanting to stay with the current WT. I think the white is 'glaring' at you because of all the other dark colors in the area and it appears to be the only white anywhere except for the flower stand. Finish the rest of the tear-out........and the white may grow on you!...See MoreHave you seen this? (Wallpaper compromise)
Comments (38)Cindyloo, I had to laugh when I read about your angry three-year-old peeling wallpaper. There's a famous story in my mother's family about her brother, who was four or five when the family moved to yet another ramshackle rectory in the village where my grandfather had the church. In a corner of the living room the aged wallpaper had begun to peel, and he just couldn't help himself...my grandmother came into the room to see him happily shearing the paper off with a silver butter knife. "What on earth are you DOING!" cried my grandmother, to which he, all round-eyed innocence, replied, "Oh, I was just standing here, with the paper knife in my hand...the clock struck, and the paper fell off the wall!"...See MoreWallpaper Removal Seriously Tedious
Comments (32)The only thing that has ever worked well - like super well - for me was a product called Safe and Simple covered with plastic wrap. I use the giant plastic wrap rolls movers use to wrap stuff, which you can find at Lowes or Home Depot. Apply the Safe and Simple per directions. Cover it with sheets of large plastic (they'll stick to the to wet wall. Let it sit for 20 minutes, do not let it dry. Gently scrape away paper and adhesive with a plastic putty knife. To be extra sure I get all the adhesive possible, I do one more round of Safe and Simple but do not cover it with the wrap. Finish by sealing in any residual adhesive with GARDZ. GARDZ is critical because it ensures any residual adhesive (that you can't see) is sealed so it can't affect new coats of paint. Leave adhesive unsealed, and the new paint will alligator. The Safe and Simple website has an interesting backstory and testing of various methods to remove wallpaper....See MoreHU-394525437
